OEM Radio compatibility issue (pic)

My 4th gen came with the TomTom GPS Head unit. I recently purchased a stock OEM head unit from a member here with the idea to swap them, thinking they would be backwards compatible. When I pulled the old head unit out (top of picture), it had totally different wiring connections than the basic head unit (bottom of picture). I was definitely not expecting this, and know nothing about stereo's. Am I SOL on replacing this TomTom unit with the oem one?

The OEM one I purchased does not say JBL anywhere on it. I definitely don't have JBL with my current set up.

Yeah.....I'd vote for the "out of luck" answer. Just looking at the connectors and back of the units I'd say your "new" one is higher power (big heat sink) so it may have been some kind of multi-speaker upgraded unit (possibly the JBL).

It also looks like the new unit may have been set up to interface with an external CD changer. This looks like the back of the head unit in my wife's van. I added a bluetooth adapter to it a while back that plugged into that unused port to power and provide an input.

There might also be some differences in the harness/setup depending on the steering wheel controls. I don't know if they changed over the life of the 4th gens but it's possible.

Overall, with a wiring harness from the donor (new) vehicle you could probably do enough cutting/splicing to make it work eventually but it's not going to be worth your time and headache.

please take a picture of the wiring harness of your 4runner.

because your 4runner had the special toyota aftermarket style headunit it looks like its using the wiring of the maker of the headunit. you might get lucky and be able to trace that wiring back and find the factory oem toyota harness.

please take a picture of the wiring harness of your 4runner.

I put the dash and everything back together, which was a total PIA so I don't have a pic of the wiring harness, however it looked like there was only one harness in there, and it didn't have any connections, other than the antenna, that looked like it fit this other radio.

Only 2 4Runner trims use that Tomtom/Eclipse stereo: 2008/2009 Urban Runner and 2009 Trail Edition. No other 4Runner or Toyota radio will work with it without cutting wires/modifications.

Damn, not what I was hoping to hear. Is it possible to get a harness for it for an aftermarket head unit? I'm guessing this would be a pretty specific harness...

No aftermarket or Toyota harness available. When I installed a Pioneer head unit in my Urban Runner, I had to cut off the plugs and connected all the wires to the Pioneer harness.

Look down into the dash. You MIGHT find a junction where the factory used an adaptor to allow the use of the tomotom stereo. Just like the old school 4runner with the factory amp. Harness is totally different behind the radio but if you follow down to the amp, unplug the amp, it's the same 2 plug harness in every other Toyota. I've done literally hundreds if not thousands of installs in Toyota vehicles, seen it may times.

You just match color to color or was it more complicated than that? Wonder if I can get a harness for this oem radio and do the same?

Edit: just checked Crutchfield and they have a specific harness option for "urban runner with navigation"

For the most parts, yes. There might be a few wires that have a different corresponding colors.

Nevermind I was just looking at the select your vehicle model spot. It doesn't even look like I can splice this oem unit into my current harness, it's missing the black circular connector and my current harness has a lot more wires than the oem radio harness.

I am trying to figure out which one goes to the on-board amplifier. I don't have an JBL system (no JBL labels anywhere). However, when I have the OEM receiver in, there is definitely some thump on the new speakers installed. Whereas with the new Alpine unit is in, all treble no thump at all...I am missing a wiring kit, if there is one.

I know for a fact that the connector on the far right has an opening for like a 6 disk cd changer. you may want to check the polarity of how you installed the wiring for your new head unit.
