I am looking to install a factory roof rack and rear spoiler on my 2001. I think the roof rack won't require any drilling because of the holes that are already there. My question is about after drilling holes for the spoiler are there inserts to install or does Toyota use some kind of self tapping fastener? Thanks for any help.

Hopefully you figured this out years ago and have since upgraded to the 2010 Trail Edition
yes there are inserts that go into a drilled out hole to screw the spoiler to the rear hatch on a 3rd gen.

need the template
First- I paid a professional to do it. Drilling/cutting into my own truck has always been a scary endeavor for me.
Second you must have a template, and even then they compared to an existing 4Runner to be sure the template was accurate. Be sure you have all the pieces together before you go drilling into the hatch.
