OEM Shock Replacement suggestions - Daily Driver

Thanks for the input guys much appreciated ..
so to sum it up i'm doing the following:

1. Shocks to be Bilstein 4600's
2. Re-use existing springs - no sagging on my existing ones,
3. Spring removal - removal by spring clamp method, I am more than confident I can do this based on the videos I've seen MTBTIM posted

Just wanted to say thanks again for everyone's input and special shout out to MTBTIM and InfamousRNR I have watched all of your videos and did a few repairs much more confidently after watching your breakdowns and step by step approach. You have saved me lots of money to date..

Ive got some KYBs that I only had on the rear for less than a year now that I've put my lift on. I had the same issues, it was bouncy as all get out. These rode quite well, I was impressed. You can have them for the cost of shipping them if you'd like. They truly are about new. If not, I'd still recommend them. They worked well.

Im in Canada. Just bought the KYB struts for $70/pc. The rear shocks were on sale a few months ago for like $20-30 each on rockauto.

When I bought mine 2002 in 2011 I had same issue, didn't want any lift and wanted to change original shocks.
I swapped them with Tokico Treckmasters, that I was told same as OEM. Didn't replace the springs.
The ride improved, but not to the extent that I wanted.
Now, 45K miles later I think it's back to square one.
I may need to do 4600HD next time. And probably the springs.

I used this method and I will never use a coil compressor again. I have tundra stuts and coils up front and the coil compressor felt like it was about to give with enough energy stored to explode like a bomb.

If the OP is still looking for opinions- I'm a fan of the KYB Monomax high pressure monotube shocks. Good quality components for a reasonable price, and they work very well with original springs. I have that setup on my 'runner and have been happy with it.

Hi all,

Excuse the poking at an old thread, but it felt cleaner than starting a new one.

I am going for a stock height replacement on my wife's (2WD) 2001 Daily with 180k miles. Rear to be done first, front in a month or two as I have bite sized windows to work on the truck.

I'm 99% going with Bilstein 4600s for shocks, but springs have me needing some steer if y'all can help:

- Are Moogs any good? (81043) I'm reading a lot about them sagging? They are certainly cheap, I'd pay a bit more for a reliably-good option

- If not, any recommendations?

OEM is more than I'd like to spend, but I'll do it if I'm told it is the smart move. OME I believe only makes lift springs, and are also pricy? Anyone else?

Also- while I'm in there is there anything else I should be upgrading or replacing on the rear? I'd rather not touch it again until the next set of shocks are due in many years...

I put the tall moog springs on my 99 2wd a few years ago. I don't tow very often or load it down with extra weight very much and I'm happy with them. No signs of sagging yet.
I also swapped out my bilsteins for KYBs and am much happier with the ride comfort.

If you don't want to worry about the rear again, check out the bushings in the rear control arms and the panhard bar.

If you are ok with the current ride height, keep the stock springs.

The gas-a-just monotubes.

My stock rear springs had 350k on them so that's why I replaced them. The rears still held a decent ride hight but they bottomed out pretty easy over large bumps and if I happen to put weight in the back it sagged.

No need to change the front springs for sure then. Rears are easy to change after the fact if the shocks aren't enough control in the rear.

The rear springs were always crazy soft - that's where the extra overload cone bumpers come in - they add a progressive 'spring' to the stock suspension before the frame mounted bump stops engage.

I've been searching through the plethora of lift threads and suspension upgrades for stock shock replacement suggestions.

I am looking for a good replacement for the stock shocks. I have zero intentions of ever lifting or doing any spring upgrades. Truck is a daily driver and intend to keep it stock and reliable as it has been.

Can anyone recommend a good replacement for the stock shocks?

I am considering the Napa Response or the Bilstein 4600's

Any experience or comments with both ( or other suggestions) appreciated.

I was wondering what you ended up going with, I'm in the same boat with worn out stock components

I ended up getting some KYB Gas Adjust from Rock Auto, ride did improve significantly and was initially stiff but settled to comfortable feel for everyday driving.
