OEM Toyota dash cam

Hi guys,

So I have been researching which dash cam I want to install in my 4runner. One of the things I am looking for is something that looks OEM when its installed. Last night I noticed on the toyota website that it is now an option for one from the dealer.

Does anyone have any experience with this cam or just some information on it?

Its not cheap at all, so I am already kinda leaning away from it. Just wondering if anyone has thoughts on it.

Thanks for those links. Seems pretty good.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with it. Maybe can comment on its quality of video and such.

I can't speak to the Toyota OEM Dash cam as I do not have one.

However, I recently installed an Grdian Defender Dash Camera and I like it a lot so far. You can hardly notice it is mounted in the windshield, but if you do, it is slim and OEM looking. It takes pretty solid quality videos as well. At $140 USD...its hard to beat.

There is surprisingly little information about Toyota dashcam. It might be good and probably it's covered by bumper-to-bumper warranty, but I would be hesitant to pay that much money for it without detailed technical specs, people reviews and video samples. What I would recommend is to get similar form factor dashcam from well known vendors. I bought my dashcam few years ago (it still works) - http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/185055-my-new-dashcam.html - but there are newer better models has been released since, so check out Dashcamtalk forum - there are lots of good cheaper dashcams out there:

I wouldn't recommend this at all. The only advantage I'd see is if the Toyota branded cam actually pulls up footage onto the screen on the stereo (which it does not). You need to download an app and connect via wifi to pull up footage onto your smart phone. Doesn't state if it's battery or capacitor based. Very important to know if you live in high temp climates.

Personally, I think a mid range cam ($80-$120) is the way to go. Every dash cam eventually craps out in 1-5 years. Also tech keeps changing so you'll want to upgrade it sometime in that time frame too.

I'd recommend the Viofo A119S (I have the non gps module to save on cash and because I'd rather not have my speed and location shown). It goes for around $80-90. Decent day video. Better than average night video. I like having the small screen to do immediate play back if needed versus having to connect via smartphone which may or may not always work. Some people make a huge stink about needing clarity to see license plates....but honestly I just use the dash cam to show fault in case of an accident.
 
I've heard great things about the A119s.
I'm waiting for a sale for this one.

I have a cheap $30 YI dash cam. I've only had it for less than a month but so far so good. it's also wifi enabled so i can download straight from the cam to the phone. the picture quality is great. i havent really checked out any videos from my evening drives.

I've also heard decent reviews for the Garmin.

The price is crazy, I was considering it just for the fact it might be covered by warranty and it maybe a good quality dash.

But with essentially zero information on it I will defiantly pass and do a bit more reading on which cam to get.

how long does it take you to download a video to your phone? from all the reviews I did prior to getting the A119s wifi downloads take FOREVER.
 
I have been investigating Dashcams for a potential rig build and realized that a lot of the Dashcams are missing some of the key features for my needs (at least from the ones I have seen on Amazon, Best Buy etc.).

Essentially, I want front and reach channels, both of which will be connected to always on power outlets and have the capability to detect motion and enable recording. Rear channel auto-recording become even more important if you go down the route of installing roof racks, roof top tents, rear ladders, campsite flood lights etc.

As it turns out, I will have to end up purchasing not 1 but 2 front facing cameras to install front and rear to establish vehicular security.

I guess I'm not really answering your question directly but proposing an alternative suggestion if you are considering on building out a rig.

the first one i had to return because the right half of the image was prefect but the left half was incredibly blurry. this one is just never quite in focus.

Theoretically maximum speed for Wi-Fi 802.11n with 2 streams is up to 144.4 Mbps connected speed, or about 65Mbps max throughput which is 8.125 MB/s.

This means that 1 minute of HD video (100MB) will be trasferred for about 12 sec. 1hr worth of video will take 12 min. If I understand it right it's a limit for 802.11n. In reality it most likely will take more time due to different Wi-Fi implementation, interference or devices state (i.e. phone is running something intensive in parallel for example). And if might take even longer if your devices have older version of Wi-Fi.
 
Mirror Dual Dash Cameras

I recently installed a rear view mirror dual dash cam with a 7" touch screen. I went with the cheaper/lesser options. Because I didn't need Android Auto or the lane departure warning system. There are other systems that will do that. Mine records front and rear continuously looping. And only save the file if there's a bump (G Sensor). The only down side is the back cam is only 480p and I can't upgrade it to 1080p. You have to buy a different/pricier model.

oh my god
an OEM dash cam that isnt integrated into the car itself? what an eyesore! Give it a few years. Some auto maker is going to integrate it into the rear view mirror or integrate into a front camera system. That is one tacky ass OEM dash cam. Look at the size of those cables
