OEM vs non OEM headlamp

If you mean just the bulb...I had the headlight out for other reasons when I took these pics but it definitely should be left in the truck, the bulb can be accessed from the backside.
Back of the headlight.
Unplug the socket from the bulb.
Remove the rubber dust boot. When you put it back on it is labeled 'top' and also keys into place.
To get the bulb out push down on the complicated looking side of the wire retainer and move it off the hook that holds it.
It swings out of the way...
And the bulb comes right out.
The bulb is also keyed so it only fits one particular way. For those who don't know don't touch the new bulb. You want it to stay clean clean clean.
To remove the headlight from the truck:

The 'eyebrow' may have a plastic clip on the outboard side as well...

habanero, I want to change or replace my 98 headlights with the 99, but since the 99 headlights that I founded have the bases broken I only want to change the headlamps. Based on your reply I now have an idea, but with the write up is much better. Thanks

Ah, that should have made sense since it took me FOREVER to find an intact junkyard set of headlights. Broken bases abound. There may be even better hid write-ups, I just did a super-quick google. Thanks for the clarification.

"If you do not have the complete assembly or like myself located the headlights with damaged buckets, not to worry. You can use the stock OEM buckets from your 96-98 but you will need the rubber boots from the 99-02 so be sure to retrieve them when you get the newer head lights"

habanero, It was copied from the Yotatech forum thread - '99 headlight Install on '98. I didn't find any thread regarding change the headlamps only.

97, I got some different bulbs. I think Sylvia or somethings from advanced auto parts for $60 and I can't complaint

Hi, habanero! I made the change following your reply, first I unhook the spring then take out the clip on the photo marked with green color around and then take out the two nuts (white) with a 10mm wrench. The 99 headlamp fitted well on my 98 bases.

96-02 are all glass.

Yes, 96-2002 are glass but 99-2002 are more clear.

I have a set of The tyc aftermarkets and have been decent for 3years. not OEM but they do have some cheap plastic adjusters that round off fairly easily. I run Phillips crystal vision bulbs
