Off Road Bike Rack Setup

So after years of searching for a setup to transport my mountain bikes on advanced 4x4 trails I think I finally cracked it! 1up heavy duty bike rack + 8” hitch extender + CBI rear bumper with dual swing outs + optional receiver hitch on the tire swing out. Maximum departure clearance (With a rack that is)

The best thing about this is that I can swing the bike rack out of the way when camping. Will be testing this setup on the trails of Moab next week!

Hahaha, I even rolled my bike into their showroom. Was picking up a factory demo for my lady. Pro tip: SC has a cool little pump track right by their parking lot and its open to the public!

Yes, Ibis is just down the road! Love Santa Cruz, so glad I live close enough to get down there a few times a month.

YES!! This is what I've been waiting for! I just recently used my REI 20% and Dividend to grab the new Kuat Pivot, which is a mass-produced RakAttach. It's been great for regular driving but it definitely impacts the departure angle. Getting a cold beer Gatorade is a lot easier when you can easily move the rack out of the way.

I can't wait to hear your impressions. How solid does it seem so far?

(BTW, I literally just walked in the door from riding my Mojo HDR. I'm probably upgrading to an HD4 next spring but I'm debating about upgrading my fork and shock in the meantime. I'm thinking a new Fox 36 and X2.)

I'm also using a Kuat Pivot and MAN it's low. Awesome for camping at the races but I pull it off if there's any chance I'm hitting the dirt. Going out to an enduro this weekend and sleeping in the 4runner so the Pivot is great for that.

Love the high clearance setup though. Should be able to take that almost anywhere.

Currently riding a Yeti but coming off a string of 5 consecutive Santa Cruz bikes. Probably back to a Hightower with 36/DPX2 next. SCs Reserve wheels are awesome too.

Nice. For what it’s worth since we’re on the topic, 4x4Labs offers s rack attachment for their rear bumper. dIY kit may be able to be retrofitted to other bumpers, depending on construction.

Yeah, if I don't decide to go all in with the CBI, I'll probably reach out to Wilco and see if they'd do a custom HitchSwing with the High Clearance style mount that they offer on their HitchGate.

90% of the time I'm just hauling myself and one bike so I've been slowly designing and building up an interior carrier and storage system. Still a work in progress but it's starting to look like something. The drawers are for bike tools and supplies, as well as hiding a small folding work surface. I've got some Rago modular storage panels coming in probably a month or so that I'll also be outfitting to hold bike stuff like shoes, helmets, etc.

The bike tray is my 2nd or 3rd prototype, but I think I'm settling in on an approach I like, and can finally get into CAD/CAM and machining to make a final version. It uses swappable fork tubes much like the Kuat trays - in fact I may just end up having it use Kuat tubes since I already have a full set for all my different bikes.

It's all sized (and the tray will be hinged) so that the rear seats can still be used to haul people.

Seems plenty solid for regular asphalt and dirt roads. The real test is going to be the 100s of miles of rocky trails I plan on doing next week. If it can survive that I think we’re good to go. The potential areas of failure I can see is the latch and spindles. Will report back!

Love Yetis too! Trying to squeeze 5 yrs out of my bike but it’s kind of like the Millennium Falcon at this point. Can’t blame it though 3 yrs old and about 3,000 miles of harsh off road use.

I would be careful about those Wilcos if you need to get up steep stuff. You will lose some departure clearance.
