Off Road, or Off Road Premium?

While I'm happy with my regular trail, as both me and the truck gets older, there are some things I do wish I had that is available on the premium (like moonroof, and side view mirrors w/ led, and homelink).

As the previous poster mentioned, once you add a few of those premium upgrades that can be added aftermarket, you end up with the price of the premium.
 
I went with the non-Premium TRD OR for my 2018. I didn't want black "leather" out here in the Colorado sun and I didn't want the moonroof due to issues we've had with the one in our Sequoia. Heated seats would be nice, but not as critical with cloth seats as they are with "leather". Homelink also would have been nice. AFAIK, the stereo and speakers are identical between the two and my driver's seat has all of the power adjustments as the premium.
 
I went from a 14 SR5 base model 4x4 to an 18 TRD ORP, and the difference is night and day. Love the softex, moonroof and Homelink...it’s also black on black and looks mean as hell. Starting blacking out all the emblems and can’t wait to get it out in the snow this winter in Vermont.

I went with a TRD OR because <strike> I wanted to have the most expensive new SUV with cloth interior </strike> I wanted the lowest possible trim level of the most badass truck.

Maybe I also wanted something out of which I could slowly build a TRD PRO killer over time, essentially having saved $8k off the cost of an actual TRD PRO by buying the TRD OR with some diligent haggling.

I have a 140k mile 2008 SR5 elsewhere in the family and the cloth on that one looks like new, so it was a no-brainer. Plus, I like the feel of cloth AND I don't like the embroidered TRD headrests on the TRD ORP. To each their own. All these trucks are great.

That said, I think the sweet spot is finding a TRD OR with KDSS. But I'm still happy with my basic one, a year in.
 
everyone complaining about dogs and their nails tearing the softex, you know you can fold the rear seats down, right?
I travel with my pup, an she has fairly sharp nails, nut she rides in back with the seats down. I also use Canvasback covers on the rear hatch and carpet.
If you are worried about the door panels, you can get covers for them too.
I worry more about her scratching the tint than the Softex.

My dog rides shotgun no matter what. No if's, and's, or but's about it. That's according to my dog :D

I use a backseat "hammock", even with the Softex. However, this is more for mud protection and to keep him from standing with his front feet on the armrest (which means he is panting right in my ear... not pleasant).

Why don't you put the rear seats down? then the pup has room to move around, can stick his/her head out the rear window...

I have before. He doesn't like being in the back with the gear. He's spoiled and wants a whole seat to himself. One time he only got 2/3 of the seat, because I needed the room and he was pissed! He faced away from me the whole time and kept making exasperated noises.

I got a rear seat dog protector that also doubles as a doggy hammock.... inexpensive and functional.

Keeps the doggy puke in one place, and keeps the dog from hurting himself during emergency braking.

doubles as a seat cover for normal people when the hammock is not in use.

I should have gotten this a long time ago.

Yea it had been mentioned earlier in the thread. My TEP has sunroof and the wifes TRD ORP doesn't have a sunroof. Both have KDSS which is what IMHO separates the Trail/TRD OR from the rest of the trims. Rear locker, crawl are nice but honestly I rarely use them whereas the KDSS gets used around every corner. FWIW I did have a 3 month wait to get a TRD ORP with KDSS and no sunroof. I also don't care for the red TRD stitching on the headrest, looks a little too bro.
 
I don't understand all the people saying softex gets so hot in the sun. I have black softex and my wife has light grey leather in her crv. Her seats get SIGNIFICANTLY hotter in the summer compared to the softex. Both our windows are tinted the same level too. I haven't been uncomfortable yet driving the 4runner.

I am thinking the same thing. I live in Miami and my seats have never been "hot". Warm or something but nothing close to where you cannot sit or be very uncomfortable due to heat.
