Off roading in Hawaii

So I know this is super short notice but the wife and I will be in the State of Hawaii starting Thursday after noon, our trip involves, Oahu, Kauai, and the Island of Hawaii and we will be there until next Thursday. as the titles states I would be looking for some off roading while I am there. I would prefer to do it on Oahu (will be our longest stint of the trip on 1 island) I looked up off roading and there is a company that takes you along the North Shore. Is that the only spot in Hawaii to go? Other question is are any of you that are on here want to meet up and take me to some of the trails you may know of? If no one here can do it that is fine, I just want to make sure I wouldn't be getting ripped off with the North Shore "expedition".

Not sure if this is what you're looking at doing but I did an ATV Tour on Kauai a couple years ago - I would skip it. Just a bunch of driving on muddy roads.

What I *do* recommend for Kauai is a doors-off helicopter tour; we used Jack Harter helicopters (Jack Harter Helicopters, Kauai, Hawaii). It's pretty expensive but trust me, it's worth every penny. This, and go hike the Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi'ai Falls.

BTW - I just returned from Kauai last week. An observation: There are Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner 4x4s *everywhere*. Lots of representation of 4th gen 4x4 V8 models in particular And the locals love to raise their trucks *sky high*, like 6" lifts of more. I guess they can get away with that on an island where the highest posted speed limit I saw in a week was only 50mph.

We are doing the helicopter tour with another company, we will be hitting the volcanoes. Im so excited for that. I hadnt planned to hike but Ill look it up!

Kalalau Trail is a great hike. I've done the day-hike portion of it to Hanakapi'ai Falls twice, most recently a week ago. It was a lot tougher the 2nd time around due to the constant on/off rain. It was *really* muddy slippery. Bring some good hiking shoes/boots. You can google plenty of info about how sketchy the trail is, especially the river crossings and potential flash floods.

We did another hike up in Waimea Canyon called Awa'awapuhi Trail. You start at the top and it's downhill the entire way, which means it's *uphill* the entire way back to the car. Complete leg burner. But it ends out on a bluff on one of the cliffs on the Na Pali coast. Absolutely amazing views.
