You didn't read the chart wrong, you read my statement wrong. I didn't include the 3rd Gen in that statement.

Another interesting factoid relating the 3rd Gen:

With just one month into the 2021 year, the last seven years (2015-2021) the 5th Gen has sold more units (751,440) than the 3rd Gen (748,871, 1996-2002)

March was another big month for the 4Runner. 12,955 sold, up from 7,818 last year, granted that was a messy month. 37,263 total for the year so far, up from 28,072 last year. Still can't find any specific info for February, but it's averaging 12,421 per month. Probably still due to some pent up demand, but with these consistently high numbers (highest first quarter sales numbers for the 5th gen), who knows when Toyota is gonna release the next gen...

WOW! Record sales in October ... yet there's a shortage of 4Runners? Something doesn't add up. How can lots be so short on vehicles and yet still record the 5th best sales month in the 12 years the 5th gen has been on the market?

That's a really good question. The next two months would have to average below 10k units each to not beat the highest sales year, 2018.

One factor is probably that more people are buying new instead of used when looking for a new car, since used has such crazy high prices right now.

My understanding from a recent conversation with a Toyota salesman is that 4Runner production really hasn't been hit yet and they're being sold while still in transit because of the crazy demand.

I was sold one in transit, however, I made sure the dealer had already been allocated the VIN. So my lead time was weeks, not months.

Interesting, sales collapsing back to ~2014 levels. Have to wonder if how antiquated this vehicle is combined with rumors of a new one coming have finally taken its toll. Perhaps the Bronco is cutting into potential sales some also.

These are likely factors of some significance, additionally the new car market is down so far in ‘23 due to rising prices and borrowing costs. Average purchase price is up to $50k!
