"Official" 5th Gen 4Runner Sales Thread

I just picked up a new 5th gen myself. I was on the fence buying a car that's design is 10 years old, but looks like I'm not the only one. I would never have thought the 5th gen had it's best sales year ever. Can't beat the T4R's combination of ruggedness, utility, and reliability!

5th Generation officially surpasses all other generations in total units sold.

Through 1st Qtr 2019, up 1,300 units over 2018.

2018 was the highest selling year of any generation by a large margin.

just a quick down and dirty look at the first 6mo average and second six month average.

I don't think we should overlook economic factors when looking at these numbers. Americans are finally coming out of the scare created by the housing crash. There is pent up demand which I think has inflated sales to make up for the down years.

I am no expert at all though, just a thought.

I have no idea either, but the market seems to have peaked overall already. Sales are down across the board and interest rates are noticeably higher than this time last year.

Only a handful of vehicles like the 4Runner and the Subaru Outback are rocking it. Even the darling of 2018, the Wrangler, just took a 21% nosedive for March and is 10% down for the year.

So the 4R is doing exceptionally well by 2019 standards.

The Fed has been raising interest rates and tightening the money supply which increases loan and leasing payments for new cars.

There’s also a surge of 2-3 year old vehicles coming off leases into the market, which can dampen used car values.

Net impact overall on a macro level is that used car sales are probably displacing new car sales.

Absolutely agree with you--we should consider the multitude of economic factors which impact auto sales. I'm sure there's a solid correlation between gas prices and 4Runner/SUV sales ... i.e. gas prices go down=increase in SUV sales.

...and just like that any gains over 2018 were wiped out in a single month.

I will be doing my part in June. May end up buying a TRD Pro today, we will see.

It’s really fallen off. 2019 will slot behind ‘18 and somewhere above 2017. I’ve been tracking, usually just posting on FB in Colorado 5th Gens.

Thanks! Wonder why sales have declined so much? Gas prices are still great and I don't think there's been any significant developments by competitors that would result in reduced sales.

I blame dealers. I’ve tried to buy three different trucks in 2019. All think they are far more awesome than they are.

This could be part of the reason. After the best sales year for the 5th gen perhaps they are getting carried away with trying to make more and more on each sale.
