Official: Gym/Workout Thread

I dont actually do normal gym workouts. I am however a climber so that is my workout, along with a bit of extra stuff for abs and grip strength. Otherwise I went from about 165lbs and not very strong with my upper body to being 175lbs now after loosing some fat and putting on a bunch of muscle and feeling great!

Edit: I am right at 6ft.

Quick question what is a good way to train grips, that is my biggest issue when deadlifting, esp at a contest when it's max weight. last meet i was at, i missed a 595 lift when i pretty much locked it out but grip failed, any tips?

Well there are a few ways. I have used most of these but not all.

So I have a forearm trainer from black diamond, either squeeze it from open hand to closed to open and so on or just close your hand and hold it. Works well I dont use it too much, only when I dont climb for a few days. Forearm Trainer - Black Diamond Climbing Gear

Next there are more elaborate ones that have springs for each finger but they do the same thing and are more $. Gripmaster Hand Strengthener - REI.com

Next there is the Gyro Ball, these are fun. Had one for a long time before I actually climbed and needed it. Just spin it to win it. Amazon.com: Dynaflex Pro Sports Gyro Wrist Exerciser: Sports & Outdoors

Next there is the tie some rope to a small wood pole 1" - 1.5" diameter (ish) and like a foot long with a weight at the other end of the rope. Stand on a chair and the weight should hang to the ground then just start rolling the pole , this will lift the weight. Have you arms all the way out and go until you get the weight to the top or you can go no more then let it back down slowly.

Next, vertical grip hangs/ pullups. Self explanitory... But here is what I built in my garage. http://i.imgur.com/RjIKGsN.jpg

Finally there is a hangboard, these are very good but also really hard on your tendons so probably dont do this one right away if at all, just putting it in as an option. These are also expensive but it is what it sounds like. It is a board with different grips that you either hang from or do pullups on. Simple. Personal favorite: Beastmaker 2000 Series | beastmaker

There are also these, never used them before. They seem to be more for getting "big" I guess and you dont want that for climbing so I have not use them but you might be interested in them. Amazon.com : Captains of Crush Hand Gripper : Hand Strengtheners : Sports & Outdoors

Hope this helps!

Yeah, they are kinda generic things but they work for what I do and that is holding myself on a rock. I have gotten to where all I need are just the pads of my fingers on a hold and i am good to go, pretty weird and really fun.

Oh man yeah, it is amazing what weight can do. Even if it does not seem like a lot at times. Like I have friends that are heavy lifters and are way bigger than I am and lift much more however I can do way more pull ups (any form) and one arm locks simply due to weight.

Bump to this thread. Any of you guys members over at bodybuilding.com? I spend most of my internet time between there, this site, and tundra solutions.

I visit the misc, losing fat, and nutrition forums. Been cutting since January. Dropped from 27% BF to 18% BF. No gains were made but maintained.

I love visiting the misc. I'm 5'8 manlet master race checking in.

Dang! I was looking for some motivational threads. I've been in a funk for the last few months because of various life stresses, and I haven't been able to pursue my passions (climbing, mountaineering, snowboarding) as much as I'd like. Some of it has to do with a lack of available partners, as I'm not a fan of free soloing, or traveling alone in avy terrain (so if any of you are in Colorado and want a climbing or mountain friend, let me know!).

Last Friday I put on my big boy pants and went for a hike off-the-couch. It kicked my ass a bit, but it was needed. I figure if I can at least hike or trail run/amble/walk/saunter a week, I'll be OK. I just have a one day climb of the Upper Exum Ridge on the Grand in August I need to get in way better shape for.

atalarico whats your hiking level? I want to try and get out more this summer and get some hiking in. I am beginner-mid level hiker, live in SE Aurora so I can get to most of the mtn hikes within an hour or so.
I finally did the incline last weekend, I completely under estimated it. I thought for sure I would crush it but it kicked my butt.

some crossfitters make me laugh.

Couples weeks ago at the gym my partner and I witenessed somebody almost caving in amongst themselve while trying to do an overhead clean and jerk. As i waited for my set i just glanced over in the mirror and everytime he would come to the bar he preformed some ritual then would grasp the bar and yell would he had the clean. Slight puase then another yell and then press but his balnce was offf and some times I was scared that would wouldnt press and just drop the bar on himself.

Now im not a fan of crossfit but an excerise somebady may be nothing to others so i don't judge on that. its just annoying when people who start crossfit thinking it must be someting to be talked about all the time or tell you that weightlifting is pointless.

i hate that people who either
a. don't work out at all
b. do crossfit
and think that crossfit is the best and only way to get in shape. the people i know who do crossfit are kinda strong, and have pretty average physical stamina, they're not really good at either. i don't get whats better about swinging your entire body to do a pull-up so that you don't have to actually use singular muscles, or dropping weight from full extension because that 49kg power clean just exhausted you.

weightlifters and cardio people/runners acknowledge the value of each others workouts, crossfit people look at them as primitive and wrong

youre so right though, how do you know if someone does crossfit? don't worry, they'll tell you
