I remember seeing the Movie, and it being a great Birthday Party for one of my friends.

Oh, you mean the new one, and not the original? I haven't seen it.

It was way too overhyped. I have lost interest. I might buy the Blu-ray when it comes out.

The first two were amazing for the time. The hype was from people watching it not from Disney, Target or car commercials. Three got too cute.

4-6 were fun to watch but just not the same. Too commercial.

This one I could care less. AJA ruined LOST at the end.

I was just at Disneyland and they had a 30 min line to take a picture with "Chewbacca" or "Darth Vader". They also had a nice display of the character costumes like Darth Vader and Storm Troopers. It was nice like museum pieces in glass until you got close enough to see the very high dollar price tags to buy your own replica helmet ($400 - $700) or a full costume for around $9000. I only felt sorry for the poor bastards that couldn't contain themselves and spent their rent money for a set.

OK that's my opinion, carry on.

TK-422, I find it quite ironic that you've lost interest in Star Wars when your icon is a storm trooper...

That being said, over-commercialization aside, I really think the movie was great. It wasn't the best movie I've ever seen and I wouldn't claim it to be, but it was a really good movie that feels like it belongs with the original trilogy. I would highly recommend seeing it on a big screen, there was such a sense of amazement and wonder of seeing a Star Wars movie for the first time, not knowing what was going to happen next.

Yes it’s ironic. When I bought my 4Runner a few months ago the first thing I thought was it looked like a storm trooper, thus the nick and icon. I thought I was original for a few days anyway.

I was 8 when Star Wars came out so it was a pretty big deal.
When the last three were out they got a lot of bad reviews but I still watched them. They were hyped and there were toy connections and a few fast food links but it wasn’t that bad.

This one though has been stuffed down our throats for the last year with guesses and predictions from so many sites I have come completely sick of anything to do with it. I would not click on any Yahoo or Google link to them. Then we get closer and all the TV and web ads doing anything they can to be included on the hype. It is what got me to the point that I really don’t want anything to do with it.

It could be a great movie but with all the above I don’t care anymore. If it’s good enough I have a nice 70” 7.2 surround system at home to watch it on when it gets to BR. It’s better than going to a theater anyway.

I had the afternoon off yesterday, and was planning on doing a little day drinking, and remembered this had opened the night before. We have a theater here that serves drinks while you're watching, so I decided that was a good place to start.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not going to say too much and spoil it for anyone, but it feels a lot more like the first three movies, and that's a good thing. A lot less CGI and more real sets. The special effects almost have a vintage look, and the soundtrack is as timeless as any of the others.

The BB robot gets a lot of laughs, and the new characters are good. Then of course you get to see all the old favorites, but 30 years older than they were the last time you saw them.

There may have been too much cross marketing done with this film, but it's certainly a worthy sequel. If you go into this looking to find fault with it, you'll come up with some things, but when you consider that it's purpose was to reopen the franchise and set the stage for new films it did a pretty good job.

My only complaints would led to spoilers, so I'll keep them to myself until a later date. I'd give it 4.5/5.

Saw it on Thursday and I agree with all of this. I thought the scenery and sets were way better and you could definitely tell less CGI (or more importantly, less obvious CGI) was used. It made it look way better than 1-3.

I thought BB was one of my favorite additions. It was fun seeing them add new characters that don't take themselves too seriously. That's what I truly loved about the original trilogy. Everything about the situation was serious, but that does not mean the characters have to always be serious or "hardcore". There were plenty of moments of funny/laughter, disgust, and a whole other range of emotions. And all of that carried over to this movie which I think worked very very well.

I also agree on the soundtrack. It started a little weird to me, but then I loved it. There wasn't a huge score like Duel of the Fates or anything, but it seemed to be re-imaginings of the original scores, which I loved. Just a little 21st century spin/flair on them which worked beautifully.

Not gonna get in to any spoilers either. But as a final note, when I first started watching the movie, it took me a solid 20 minutes to truly "feel" like I was watching another star wars movie. It has just been so long that it took a little bit for the feeling to set in. And when it did.... wow. Awesome.

To be honest I don't know if I've ever watched a Star Wars movie all the way through beginning to end. I've caught some of the movies on TV where I didn't see the whole thing, missed the beginning, just caught the end, etc. I really didn't have any expectations or plans of going to see the new one but I got free VIP tickets to a red carpet screening through Century Link so we went.

In general I thought it was pretty good, I felt like it was getting a little long and drawn out but for being a 2.5 hour movie it held my attention. It didn't come across as a movie that your lost without knowing everything about everything leading up to it. Some basic pop culture knowledge about Star Wars was plenty. The movie stands on it's own pretty well.

***POSSIBLY VAGUE SPOILERS***
There were 2 specific things that bugged me. They are relatively minor in the grand scheme of things but they immediately came across as glaring plot holes.

The light sabers. When bad guy gets pissed he takes the light saber to the whole computer station area, he chops up metal like it's butter and when he stops you see molten metal dripping down from the edges of the slashes - awesome. Then they are having the light saber fight in the woods, they are cutting down trees like it's nothing, they can take down a foot thick tree and it doesn't even have enough resistance to slow down there swing - bad ass. Then bad guy lands a full force light saber swing directly to good guys back, no big deal, it's a flesh wound - aaaaaand you ruined it.

The other thing was blowing up planet death star. Bad guys are screwed, planet is going up, they give the order to evacuate. The good guys get out without a problem... wtf. An entire planet worth of bad guys are going to get into ships and evacuate and yet you see nobody leave and the good guys encounter no resistance. So did all of the bad guys die and the franchise is over? That what it seems like, otherwise why wouldn't the bad guys have tried to shoot them down while they were evacuating or just brought the fight to the good guys on their home turf, they knew were it was, they we're trying to blow it up.

If anyone hasn't seen the originals yet, or if you have but want a refresher, check out "Machete" order (named after the blogger who originally wrote about it).

Start with the originals, 4-5. This is Luke's story. After the big reveal at the end of 5, jump back to 2, then 3 (Anakin's story, like a flashback). Then jump forward to 6 for the grand finale which brings the two stories together. Later, if you feel like it, go back afterwards and watch 1.

So 4-5-2-3-6(-1)

Benefits:
- Everything just flows better than 1-2-3-4-5-6 or 4-5-6-1-2-3 order
- All big twists and reveals remain unspoiled;
- Skipping 1 eliminates 95% of Jar-Jar, leads to better character continuity, and that movie really doesn't add much to the series anyway.

man i've never seen any of the star wars movies, so ive been hella excited to watch them all.
starting watching episode 4 and got bored like 30 minutes into it :twitch:

That's not super surprising actually. I feel like nowadays, people just getting in to it are either instantly hooked or sorta like, "this is what the hype was all about?" Keep in mind that the first movie came out in the 70s. When it came out, it was a massive culmination of graphics and special effects and stuff that people have never seen before. So obviously it doesn't hold up as well. But I highly recommend pushing through it and watching the entire fourth movie and then go from there. It definitely picks up cause they had to use this movie as an introduction to an entirely new universe that people have never seen or heard of before.

I feel fortunate enough I got to see Star Wars 3 in the theatres when I was 10. I had no idea what SW was before I walked in. It was life-changing; LOL... I'm excited to go see the new one soon.

Saw it in 3-D and thoroughly enjoyed it. Daisy Ridley was fantastic as Rey. There were lots of one-liners and asides that recall the humor of the original trilogy - although Leia seems to have lost her sarcastic wit with increasing age and rank. BB-8 rolls through the film like a faithful puppy. Intentionally or not the actor who plays Kylo Ren bears a resemblance to the actor who portrayed the pre-Vader Anakin Skywalker.

There is resolution at the end of the film so it doesn't leave the viewer hanging like the third installment of Hunger Games, yet clearly hints at what's to come. Recommended.

Interesting cameo by Max von Sydow. I wondered if it was a nod to The Exorcist, in which he finds an amulet in the desert (the map?) and ultimately perishes in a battle with evil (Kylo Ren). Then again, I could be wrong.

I liked it a lot! I've never been a big star wars fan, I don't think I honestly watched all of them until the past few weeks with my girlfriend. I think this movie was similar to the original 3, but was also superior in a LOT of ways. I feel like people try to read into the other movies more than the writers ever intended, and I feel like the 7th one actually intends to have lots of back story and side plots.

Loved the graphics and how practical a lot of effects were, some epic locations. I enjoyed the plot line. Really liked the character interactions and development. People always praise the original trilogy but I didn't think any of it was very special or the plot or characters were fleshed out, which this one the characters didn't feel so bland. Good interactions and dynamics, etc.

Hype train or not, this was honestly a really good movie regardless if you have seen any star wars or not.

One last thing (SPOILER-ISH):

I liked how the Force was used a lot, everyone is always talking about the Force but in the previous 6 films it was RARELY used. Also, I liked how Kylo Ren seemed like a legitimate bad ass and people were scared of him, I just never got the same feeling from Darth Vader ever as I did from the first half with Kylo Ren.

You are showing your age there, I was young enough (am old enough? whatever) to see the original trilogy in theaters and DV was the absolute definition of evil bad guy. While ultimately Darth Vader turned back to the light, for the first two movies he was chillingly ruthless and brutal. I actually thought by the end of The Force Awakens that Kylo was something of a weakling, like maybe there was a better pupil than him in Luke's Jedi academy that he was jealous of and that is what turns him to the dark side and now that lack of confidence is manifesting itself.

Regardless of all, this was a thrilling movie, everything that the original trilogy was time 1000, and everything that the prequels absolutely failed to be.

Oh my f$&@ing gawd just saw it in 3D loved it but will not spoil anything. I do recommend watching it in 3D. I don't really like 3D movies and usually pass up 3D movies cuz I think it doesn't enhance the movie experience and I'm super cheap. But if you haven't seen it yet go 3D it was spectacular and if you liked the original 3 you will like this one.

The reality is many of the older fans will balk and complain that the movie is over-hyped and over-sold; for the most part they aren't entirely wrong in that respect. Yet, they're not entirely right; the original Trilogy (particularly the first and second) were essentially cultural icons at the time. They were the ones that set the majority of tropes, memes, and patterns we see in today's movies, TV shows, stories, ect. Not that many of those tropes didn't already exist, but Star Wars brought them together in a way that the public embraced them and was amazed by them. It's hard to duplicate that type of awe and amazement when you started it, much in the way that I am sure if they did a more contemporary and revitalized Blade Runner; it'd be a good movie, but it wouldn't have the impact and gravitas the original had because of how deeply it shifted our very culture and society at the time.

In that respect I would say that many people over-expected and the movie was a bit over-sold, but that it just fed into people's high expectations and desires. As a Star Wars movie I felt it was very good and faithful to the originals, much of it feels familiar and nostalgic. Which makes sense, they are not only continuing the original trilogy, but in a way trying to roughly recap/bring everyone up to speed (believe it or not, not everyone has ever watch all the Star Wars movies or even one of them in this day and age) so much of the movie felt like large portions of Episodes 4~6 being mashed together. I was genuinely okay with that because it fit the story well and gave it a very familiar feeling.

I was glad that they went a different direction with Kylo Ren than I had expected. I figured they were going to try and out-do Darth Vader with a darker and more sinister character, which I think would have failed horribly in this particular case (though if they had done that with General Grievous and kept him in his bad-ass state like he was in Clone Wars I would have been giddy as hell!). Instead we can already tell from the beginning of the movie that Kylo Ren is young, powerful, and ultimately inexperienced. The scene where he's given the news that they escaped Jaaku shows his youth and lack of discipline, throwing a rage filled tantrum and destroying the computer bank. He has the rage and darkness to become Sith, but he is young in the ways of the dark side; lacking the experience of war and hardship that tore at Anakin Skywalker and drove him to the Dark Side.

It's a good place to start with his character, rather than trying to show us this already established monster they had tucked away that was far worse than the Darth Vader; they give us his unofficial legacy. A young man conflicted and twisted into the darkside. The scene where he asks Han Solo to help him with his conflict was predictable (to me at least), he struggles to shed the light within him because he's not burdened with as much hardship and pain as his grandfather was. I'm very interested to watch this character's development under this Supreme Leader (Darth Plageruis perhaps? Some sort of retconned Rakata? The StarKiller Base strangely mirrored how StarForge worked, albeit slightly different end result).

Rey mirroring much of Luke's original path is interesting, her "awakening" and watching her mentor figure die in much the same way is very nostalgic. I will genuinely be surprised if she isn't his daughter as I feel they made that very clear throughout the movie. Fin is another character I am somewhat intrigued by, the hesitant coward seeking redemption through love is a well played card; but I can be a hopeless romantic sometimes, so I'd like to see how they develop him further as well.

All in all the movie felt very Star Wars and it did feel like a good continuation of the series itself. Yes it lacked the gravitas and impact that the first couple movies of the original Star Wars did, but that's not something that can be easily replicated in this day and age; most kids who see the movie now will not feel the same impact as those who were exposed to it 20+years ago did because much of what hit us so hard in those movies has been done many times in the last 20 years.

I look forward to episode 8. :)

Yes! I'm ready for the next one! That was one of the good things about being born in the early 90's, I didn't have to wait for 5 and 6 to come out after I watched 4. And I was 12 when 3 came out, so it's been a while on those and don't really remember having to wait on them. This sucks now, I know how the older guys have been feeling, haha. And how much the disappointment of 1 must have sucked. Although the theory that Jar-Jar is a Sith Lord is an interesting and pretty convincing read if you haven't heard...
