I wanted to learn about 1911 pistols and how they function, so I decided to build one from a Stealth Arms 80% kit. I received the kit about 6-7 weeks ago. The frame comes partially finished, but requires the builder to drill holes for the sear pin and hammer pin. I then used a jig and cutting car to cut the slide rails into the frame; did the same for the barrel seat.
Next, I had to use lapping compound to mate the slide to the frame. This was time consuming and difficult at the start, but also fun. Ended up with a tight fit. Then, I assembled and disassembled the gun several times to make sure it passed all function testing...this required some fine tuning of the sear, disconnector, hammer, thumb safety and grip safety. After I felt confident it would function properly, I took it to the desert for some test firing.
The first 100 rounds went through without any issue, except it occasionally would drop the magazine upon firing. I replaced the mag catch with a drop-in Wilson Combat and it fixed the mag drop issues. After putting another 200+ rounds through it, I decided to have it cerakoted (black slide/sniper grey frame). Lastly, I installed the night sights.
