Own too many to keep count of, but he gems are the the 9" SBR Bravo Company AR in 300 BLK Out, coupled with an Osprey 45 for shooting sub sonic only in the back yard.... Fun times!

Maybe you can help me...
I'm torn between picking up a Glock 17 and S&W M&P Shield (both in 9mm), since BOTH feel really good in hand. Both are reliable as hell. Both are pretty similar handguns, with just a few differences...
Which one would you take with you? Why?

I'm carrying my Shield today...but personally, I love the Glock. Although, the stock sights on all Glocks blow. But for 80 or 90 bucks you can throw some TRUGLO sights on it - makes a world of difference. When I go to the range, I always shoot both guns but the Glock is way easier to dial in (especially if you're relatively new to shooting).
The S&W M&P Shield is definitely much smaller than the Glock 17 and is easier to conceal. My Glock holds 17 rounds and my Shield holds 8. Subcompact single stack vs a full size tactical double stack. If you choose to go with the Shield - make sure you get one without the safety, especially if it will be your carry weapon.
I would go Glock if I were you but you can't go wrong with either. Stick with 9mm too! .40 is becoming obsolete, you'll go broke shooting .45 and 9mm is cheap, widely available and the ballistics of the rounds have gotten so good that most law enforcement is going back to 9mm. Have you checked out the Glock 19?? It's a little smaller than the full size 17 but holds 15 rounds and is a superb option.

G17 and a S&W shield are completely different tools. One is a full size and one is a sub compact. One is a single stack one is a double stack.
First figure out what role you want for your tool, your needs, your limitations and your wants and then pick the best tool that fits.
Are you going to be carrying this gun for self defense? Sticking it in a drawer for home defense? Is it just a range/fun gun? Are you going to take a high round tactical training course with this pistol?
First figure out your needs and wants and then fit the tool to that standard.
Both are great guns, I own several of both.
M&P's have a slightly lower bore axis, which aids in limiting felt recoil and keeping the gun on target with faster target aquisition.
Glock factory sights are awful, but I never keep factory sights anyways so that's actually a plus to not pay for a higher quality factory sight I'm going to remove anyways.
Heinie Straight Eights are my go to night sight for both glocks and M&P's.
But everything comes down to personal preference.
Figure out which tool fits your needs best, shoot the shit out of it and then decide what enhancements make sense for you personally.

Like he said, a full size G17 fills a totally different niche than a shield.
For every day carry, get the one you'll carry every day.
A big fat G17 that's a pain to carry will get left at home, whereas there will never be an excuse to not grab the shield.
If you want a nice inbetween, make sure you try out an M&P9c. It's slightly smaller and more concealable than a G19, with a respectable capacity of 12+1. After carrying a G17 and G19 for years, followed by a shield sized single stack, I've finally settled on a M&P9c wearing a TLR3.

This is interesting to hear that the glock is easier to dial in..... Is it because it's just a larger gun overall, or is there some other factor to it?
I'm strung up on the 17, 19 and shield. All 3 seem perfect for me, and regardless, I'm capped at 10 rnds (9+1) as per Commiefornia.
I knew this would come up. Yes, I know that the 17 and shield are completely different tools, but both are extremely comfortable, fit into my budget perfectly, and both have things that make one better than the other in some areas. (IE: shields a bit smaller for CCW. Glock feels a bit more solid in hand since it fills my hand just a hair bit better).
the issue is I've come down to the 17, 19 and shield. Now obviously, it would be ideal to get a 17 or 19 and a shield... But... I don't have a tree that grows money..
Honestly, the main purpose of it would be range/fun gun, along with Home Defense + possible CCW(Which I will take training for). This in itself, makes it difficult. lol

With the info you've provided a G19 or an M&P 9C would likely best fit the multiple roles you intend for this tool.

Have you shot an M&P9c or XD or other polymer frame striker fired pistol to compare to the glock?
Please actually try them out before you buy a glock. Glocks are good, but the other makers improved on what glock started.

You've got a point though, now thinking about it.. The G17 would be the gun to take depending on what I would wear.. In winter/loose jacket, it'll be perfect, since it'll be covered.. But in the summer, I might want something more compact..

Off the top of my head, i've shot a Sig P2022, Glock G22/G17/G21 and a few more that aren't coming to mind. But definitely not a M&P9c (since it's off the roster), and not the XD9/XD40.
I'll definitely try them out!

Have you tried a 5th gen g19? If not, try it out. It's an improved grip angle.
