Offroad Bumper

My front bumper is mussed quite a bit, which is the good excuse I need to replace it with something burlier for my summertime fun.

Want something that is a full front bumper, but is still airbag compatible (onroad safety is important).

So what are my options? Looking a lot at the ARB.

07 Sport XREAS and I don't want to redo my suspension apart from adding spacers if necessary.

ARB and Shrockworks are some of the most popular bumpers. Shrockworks is probably the most popular or most liked. Downside is wait time in ordering, some people have stated 2 or more months. Ordered ARB about 2 weeks ago and have had it on for almost a week. Have been very happy with the it. Took about 4 hours.

I don't have one...but many members waited anywhere from 2-4 months. I would still choose Shrockworks over ARB.

IIRC its not the bumper itself that sets off the airbags, its the sensors on the frame, and the sudden stop (crash) that sets off the airbag, if you look on the frame rails, you will see the airbag sensors, generally they are yellow, do mess with them, lol

IMO the wait for shrockworks is worth it. They fit the contours of our trucks much better. Many people get the ARB for the instant gratification. This is how I looked at it... 6 months from now will you look back and wish you had waited a little longer?

Do the bars on the Shrockworks stick further forward than the bumper itself? In other words, if you rin tinot a flat surface, what is the first point of impact?

It sort of looks likes the Shrockworks push inything (anyone) you hit down under the wheels than up over the hood. That would technically make it illegal (on the street) in many places.

As just a bumper I look the look of the ARB better, but mounted on the 4th Gen, maybe not...

Shock Works is more expensive and if I have to wait 6 mo for it, it is the same as waiting a year as 4wheeling is a summer thing here.

It's a tool as well as a jewel.

I am a little biased but I would say wait for the Shrockworks. My bumper was messed up for about 18 weeks while I waited for the Shrockwroks but I know it was worth the wait.

It is handling it ok as of now, I have started to notice it sagging a little. I have only had the bumper for about 2 weeks though. I am just waiting until I can get a full suspension and a body lift and do it all at the same time. The SW bumper weighs less than the ARB also, but if there is a winch being put in either one then the coils need to be replaced when the bumper goes on.

one thing you have to account for is, frame flex, when wheeling the frame will flex some, the bumers that sit tight will come in contact with body parts, most aftermarket bumpers dont take that into concideration, most custom bumpers will.

Yes, very true. I was told by another guy on here to leave a gap, I left about a 3/8"-1/2" gap between the bumper and the fender; despite the way it may look like there isnt a gap. If you are ok with waiting, I waited 18 weeks, then you should go with the SW. The ARB sticks quite a bit more, just more bulky overall; not saying that it's a bad product. I have a set of PIAA 510's that were accidentally sent to me extra from SW and they sell them for $200 I will be happy to sell them for $150 + shipping if anyone here wants them.

I can't afford a bumper AND a whole new suspension AND sliders :redbrick::redbrick::redbrick:

A new suspension doubles what I was going to be able to afford!!!!!!!!!!!

The SW weighs 142 without a winch. I am running the stock suspension with a Cornfed 3/2 and it's not sagging it enough to have to get the new suspension right away. Plus, all you would need are new coils in the front.

Can I put an OME coil on or do is there a specific stiffer coil brand I need?

I mean I figure I'll add 180# on the bumper, 60# on the winch, 80# on the sliders, and I've got 50# on the hitch.

370#... that's like 2 passengers. Plus I'm always hauling around about 70# more gear minimum... plus me at #150 so my standard cargo load will be #590.

That's like having 4 people in the car... that's not a huge load!

ONE LAST PROBLEM: I cannot have an effective overall lift under load of more than about 0.5" because otherwise I cannot fit into my really short (6'8") garage with my ski box which is the lowest profile available.

I understand that ARB somehow tests their bumpers for airbag compatibility.

Are there any glaring differences from the ARB bumper or any obvious indicators that the Shrockworks bumper would not set off your bags in a crash?
