Offroad Emergency Tranceiver

I'm new to the 4Runner world having just aquired a 1997 standard 4x4 4-cyl 5-speed. I want to hear any experience or preference for radios and communication gear for the outback. I'm mostly interested for emergency use but may get into using it for talking with other 4x4's in my area.

A good CB radio with a roof mounted antenna.....

And a cell phone with a large calling area...
