Best Compromise

Get a copy of Garmin US Topo and download to the Nuvi. You can then select between Street maps or Topo.
 
Thanks guys, I've heard the Navigon app for the iPhone might be a good option too, so maybe I'll give that a try and see it it works well off road.

The 550 seems nice, but gets expensive after buying the TOPO maps for it.

The topo maps are available for free if you know where to look (torrents, etc), but ya if you are paying for them it gets real expensive, real quick.
 
I've been really satisfied with my Zumo 660. It's weather resistant and is made for going between a car/truck and a motorcycle which is exactly what I bought it for. It comes with mounts for both and functions pretty much just like the nuvi series so it's easy to use. It's not cheap though and I'm sure there are better options if you plan on carrying it while hiking.
