Offroading in eastern PA?

I live an hour north of philly (zip 18930), and am looking for some good (beginner level) areas to offroad in. I used to have a few areas around my house, but over the years most of that property has been developed or is now otherwise off limits.

I guess what Im looking for are forest service roads that can be used that are not too difficult.

I also know about Rausch Creek, and based on the photos Ive seen am not interested in going there.

i'm in west chester and looking for similar trails. no rock crawling, just some good trail running. camping would be a plus too.
 
Hi fellas! I'm from NEPA and the type of off roaring does exsist here in PA and in NJ but most of what you're looking to do is not legal or is whats considered grey area, meaning no one REALLY knows if they are allowed to be there, but nobody has bothered them "YET". please do not exclude Rausch Creek just by the pictures you see, Rausch has a little of everything and you can challenge yourself if you'd like to what ever level you and/or your vehicle are capable of. I could lead around the entire park in my stock '08 Rav4 never touching the same trail twice and you'll come away with nothing more than a little mud on your flaps and smile on your face and never have to worry about getting any tickets or having to deal with any trespassing issues. If that does not float your boat than I would point you in the direction of the state parks like the loop out to boulder field in hickory run state park. Beautiful scenery, groomed dirt or stoned roads, you'll never even need 4WD. GWNF in NJ has a lot to offer, but I will tell you this some areas will be muddier than what I think you'er after. If you do go to GWNF take some one who has been there before and is a little familiar with the park. There is also Bald Eagle National forest here in PA near Williamsport the will offer several day of "offroad" fun and they have camping hiking and fishing available. I'd love to get out with you guys but life is a little at the moment. Enjoy your second diff hell that's why you payed extra for it and that's part of the reason you're on this board. I did a google search and found a GWNF in virginia but not NJ...
 
hey 3 mphtoy, thanks for the info.

i've actually done the loop @hickory in my 3rd gen, and yeah, it's tame to say the least. def looking for something more intense than that. i've seen some parks out on the SW border of PA/MD/WV that have potential, but i havent taked with anyone from the area.

rausch sounds fun, maybe in the spring.

GWNF straddles VA + WV. It's dirt forest roads with some stream crossings and some rocky areas. Good beginner stuff.

As far as eastern PA, Rausch Creek is the place. There used to be another park a little north of there but it closed.

From the pics Ive seen of Rausch creek it looks like a good place to beat up a new vehicle, mud holes, rock/boulder crawling, etc..If they truly have tamer trails there that wont beat up a new ride might be fun for those of us looking for tame trails to organize a trip there...

Sounds like I might have to schedule a trip to GWNF in the future also!

I'm also around your neck of the woods. Grew up/parents are in Bucks County, I live outside Philly in Manayunk. I've only been to the Pine Barrens so far in NJ off of the expressway. Most of it is pretty tame, but there are some areas that get pretty muddy. Just look at my avatar. That's from the Pine Barrens, and before I had a lift! :) Let me know if you guys go to Rausch, I'd love to check it out.

Where exactly off of the AC expressway. Im around there a lot.

RC has trails rated at all levels.
 
I apologize guys I was confusing GWNF for NJ pine barons my mistake. So again I must apologize. Really, check out bald eagle national forest here in PA it's REALLY great day out! Also, let me know when you guys want to do Rausch I'd love to tag along on a stocker friendly run! My theory about the pictures that you see from RC that always make it look so nasty is because there is not much interest in taking pictures of your truck just sitting on a dirt road so what you see are mainly carnage shots, stuck pics, and poser pictures. As long as you stick to the proper trails and utilize the bypasses you have a fantastic time with no damage!

I'm always happy to help get more people out on the trails. I live in White Haven which is about 10 mins from hickory run so my wife and will often get some sandwiches for supper and take a ride back there for a little relaxation and a picinic to unwind from work.
 
alot of ne pa-ers on here, im in for something once it gets warmer. we should have a mini-get together
 
A few of us might be going to Rausch on Saturday the 29th. They will be open from 8-4 and are also having a ride along for beginners.
