Oil Cap Assembly - Gen 5

After my last few oil changes, the cap assembly is worn and the wrench slips. The filter case is plastic but I found an aluminum one on Ebay. I called the dealer to see if the part would fit and they were not sure. They told me that it would fit on other cars but could not confirm the 4Runner ft. Anyone out there convert to an aluminum oil filter house such as this one - TOYOTA 4RUNNER GENUINE TOYOTA Oil Filter Housing Cap Holder 15620-31060 | eBay

If you use the correct tool, you will not damage your oil filter housing. There is a specific tool designed to remove your oil filter housing.

Although I haven't done this myself I have heard on other threads here that it will work and that the dealer said the same thing, they couldn't confirm it to work. Try it and let us know!

Did you measure the center support post? I recall another member got a metal one and the center post was much shorter than the plastic unit used on the 4Runner.

Though to be honest, switching the posts over is easy enough.

Nice call, yes I did switch posts as they are not the same. Although I do not recall which was longer/shorter
 
As I just broke my plastic housing this evening :mad2: and need to purchase a new one, can we come to a general consensus that this replacement works, and that there are no adverse side effects to it? Dealer quoted me $130 for the direct 4R replacement. I'll be posting more about my mishap in the 5th Gen Oil Change thread shortly...
 
try using a oil filter tool that grabs on the tabs of the filter cap. this way there is no slippage. I use one of these along with my aluminum filter cap. This also works with the plastic housings as well.

 
Alright, I'm looking to switch to the metal housing.

I just did the 80k oil change and this is the third time that I've not been able to get the drain plug out before removing the housing. Essentially, the drain plug is seized in there and I have not replaced the smaller o-ring in 30k miles. Not a big contributor to comfort.

The good news is that it appears to be doing its job. The bad is that I don't trust it to continue doing its job indefinitely. I've even tried putting the plastic housing in a vice and using an impact to remove the drain plug. Even tried applying heat before doing that again. No luck. I'm not willing to tighten the vice any more and I'm afraid anything more extreme will damage the housing. This means I need a replacement. Either plastic or metal, and I like the idea of the metal one

Sounds like I basically have two options. Purchase Toyota part number 15620-31060 and swap the inner tube for the one that would need to be removed from my OEM housing, or purchase the Dorman 917-016CD that comes with multiple tube sizes.

Surprisingly, the Dorman is more expensive than the Toyota one. I'd prefer the Toyota one even if it were more expensive, so that makes it an easy decision (hopefully).

I'd just like for someone to confirm two things:

1. Toyota part number 15620-31060 does fit (as indicated by [MENTION=96008]Engineer[/MENTION] above), and

2. The tube can easily be swapped to allow use of OEM filters.

I purchased a case of filters from the dealership and I want to use those as I believe they are better than any aftermarket options.

If the answer to either of the above two questions is no, is there any benefit to using the Dorman replacement like [MENTION=92820]coltjester[/MENTION]?

I am lucky. No need for a special tool or one that breaks the plastic housing.

The person in Japan who put the oil filter housing on my wife's '14 4R got the bottom plate on so tight that I have used a 3/8s breaker on it to get the housing off from day one.
