Oil Change Advice

Greetings, I have a 2000 Toyota 4Runner SR5 with 151k miles on it. Im not a pro at this subject. What type of oil should I buy when doing the oil change?

the manual says 5w30, but i use 10w30 since its a "high mileage" car. im currently running the high mileage full synthetic oil to try and clean out my system a bit. whatever brand of oil you want to use is up to you.

Yep, 5W30. I have 135,000 miles and I still use 5W30. It is not a biad idea to go to 10W30 if you are burning a little oil, but try and stay with the recommeded oil if you can.

Godd luck if changing the oil. Getting oil filter off is a bear. You may want to do a search on this.

i like to run mobil 1 5w-30 with a toyota filter, the toyota fillter is the same price as the cheap crap they sell at auto zone etc. And buy your oil at wal-mart.

I do the same. Sometimes, I use the Pure One filter and other times I use the Toyota filters. Buying at Walmart is about the cheapest place, having a coupon for Pep Boys or Costco may beat the price. Of course you have to go to the hassle of coupons. At Walmart, the best price is the 5 quart cotainer.

I run shell 5w-30 or 10-30 depending on my mood from Costco. They were $20 for a case of 12 quarts so i bought 4 cases.

the quality of oils today are so good that unless you are doing extended drain intervals you are safe using any of the name brand oils.

however if you are planning on doing extened drains then i stongly recommend mobil 1 or penz ultra.

I went with amsoil 0w-30 synthetic, I put it in around October when the weather was cooling off a bit. By the time I reach hotter weather it will thicken up a tad anyway. So far, I have lost more oil from the dip stick checking it than it has burned, very pleased. As far as I know it has been running synthetic since new.

I use a Mobil 1 15,000 mile filter but only plan to go about 10k on it and the oil.

I'm running Mobil 1 5w30 Full Synthetic with a Toyota oil filter..

even at 232k, she still runs like a champ..

best deal I got was at Costco with coupon.. It is $24 dollars for 6 quart.

If not, wally world is your best shot with non-coupon.

227,5xx miles and I run 10w30 Castrol High Mileage with a Toyota filter. My Tacoma with 254k miles got the same treatment.

I have some buddies telling me that high mileage is just a scam to charge a few bucks more.
He uses synthetic, and changes his oil every 5k-7.5k miles

What exactly are you referring to when you say high mileage? Do you mean like the above poster that said he uses High Mileage Castrol?

Yes, He says anything that claims it is "high mileage oil" is just a way for jiffy lube, and any oil you buy at the store to charge more for the same thing. Green beans are the same as hericot vert. You pay 2 times as much for the same thing, just prettied up.

Sometimes I let Toyota do the oil change since it comes out to what I'd pay for the oil & filter and then have to do the labor. Also, I can even get a free car wash sometimes..

Other times I've ran Mobil 1 Extended Performance with Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter. Or I run Mobil 1 Synthetic & Toyota filter.

I would have to disagree based on personal experience, not to mention all the research done. I will just say synthetics vs Conventional oil. Synth has more detergents in it, if you don't believe that, run some good synthetic in a car that's been running Dino for 100k+ miles. It will likely clean out all the carbon deposits, causing the engine to burn oil where it previously was okay.

My friend decided to change to synth in his later model Chevy truck. He had about 125k and after he switched, oil burning began. Same thing happened to my old Corolla that I changed to Synthetic at around 90k, cleaned the engine out and then burned oil.

I have about 4k miles on my oil change and the oil still looks very good. Possibly with the help of a good filter, but every synthetic I have run, looks much better than Dino for much longer. I used to run Mobil 1 Synthetic and I was happy with it but wanted to give Amsoil a try.

I have no emotional attachment to the type of oil I run nor any ego to bruise about it. Until proven otherwise, all facts and evidence show that some oils are indeed designed for higher Mileage.

My $.02 anyway

Curious. Why is it burning oil after you change to synth? What did you do to stop the oil burn? I'm asking because my 4R is about to turn 100K, and I'm seriously thinking about changing to synth.

I am by no means an expert on why it does it but I will tell you what I know.

When you use regular oil, it doesn't keep the engine as clean as Synth does. Something like it builds up carbon deposits on the piston rings among other places. When that happens the rings dry out and rot or something. Then when you decide to use Synth, all those detergents go to work on those carbon deposits, the now exposed and dry piston rings now begin to leak.

Some claim that they will begin to re-expand as the oil gets in them good but it never did with my Corolla. It only burned about a quart every 2k miles so I didn't worry about it much. The owners of it now added some type of thicker oil designed to fix the issue and I hear it doesn't burn any oil anymore.

If you are going to change to Synth, better sooner than later. If you do, keep an eye on the oil until you are sure that it is not burning, or how much it is burning.
