oil change level? 6.0 quarts or more?

I just did my first oil change at 600miles. I read my manual and it states that the engine takes 6.0 quarts of oil for refill. However, when I start my engine, let run, and let the oil settle, I find that the dip stick is showing a little less than half-way between the low and high levels. Should I add more? Or, should I stick with the 6.0 quarts eventhough the level is below midway?

V8 or V6?

I have a 4.0 V6 and manual says 5.5 qts, and it goes about 1/4 inch above second mark on dipstick.
These dipsticks are a poor design, when I first got mine I marked the dipstick with a hacksaw at the level from factory.

To answer your question if the manual says 6 quarts don't add any more until you find out whats going on.

If it's a V8 I believe it takes 6.7 quarts including the filter. I'll double check this when I get a chance to look in the manual, unless someone with a better memory chimnes in before then! :arrow:

I just did an oil change for the 1st time in my 2001 4runner. Just lazy until now and always went to the dealer for the first three years. I was told 5.5 quarts...but I had to add 6 to be on the dipstick full line.
