Oil change?

Hello, new to the forum and also a new owner of a gen 5 2011 sr5 2wd. I've recently change the oil and oil filter in the vehicle after 5,000. I put 6 1/2 quarts in let the engine run, turned it off, let it set for a while. Check the dipstick and it's over the fill mark (past the second dot). Checked it sever times to make sure same thing. Let a little oil out still over the mark. 6.6 quarts is what the manual said. Yes I'm on level ground. What is the exact amount so I can get this right next time.

I've either owned or maintained for others, many Toyota's.

Most all of then have/had an oil level reading beyond the full mark.

When I change oil, I do so when the engine is fully warmed up. Doing it this way gets the bulk of the oil out of the engine. I let it drain for a good half hr., or more, then refill with what the owners manual calls for. While it's draining, I check other fluids, etc. and I'm never "nine beers into a twelve pack".

Some people drive the vehicle around the block a few times, then drain for 5 mins. or so. In my humble opinion, this leaves a given amt. of old oil in the engine and contributes to sludge build up. This approach can also lead to a reading beyond the full mark when adding what the mfg. calls for.

Assuming you drained it "hot" and let it drain, you have nothing to worry about.

It was hot when I drained it and I let it drain for several minutes. Don't get me wrong I'm not new to this stuff, just new to Toyota's. My 2003 chevy silverado take 6 quarts exactly on an oil change and it's right on the mark, same with my duramax 10 quarts on the dot. Guess I'm just spoiled lol! Thanks for the help.

I'm of the opposite opinion. I drain oil after the engine has set overnight and everything has drained back. I've got better things to do than waste half an hour letting oil drain. Turns a 20min project into an hour and I can promise you that that last 1/4-1/2qt of old oil isn't going to hurt anything but like I said in another thread, do whatever gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling.

When I buy a new used vehicle, I never trust the persons word or their records in regards to oil changes. I always change the oils, and then do them again at 500 miles for the oil, and about 2500 for everything else. I may be wrong and using my old school thinking, but I believe that by doing this, you will discover any problems,(such as metal grindings hidden with latest "saw dust, technique, and will be able to repair it before a critical failure occurs,) and it also cleans the engine and reveals any sludge build up, in which case I do several out of interval changes which usually cleans it up.

What you are talking about sounds to me as if you have some sludge build up, and likely had some remaining oily sludge in the block or pan, or you did not let the engine heat up enough.

Do few cheap oil changes with a detergent oil, and see if the problem goes away. If not, and the oil looks clean and has no metal in it, or shitty looking sludge in it, fill it, check it, and learn exactly what you fill line is on the stick and then disregard the fill marks, the stick was made on Friday just before beer thirty and the calibration of the CNC was off...
