Any of you guys use those quick change oil shops that are everywhere to service your 5th generation 4Runner?

Sitting here at the dealership getting an oil change on my ‘14 limited reading this. Is $85 the going rate for an oil change and tire rotation? They said it’s only needed every 10k miles and it’s 7 quarts of synthetic. It’s my wife’s truck and really don’t know squat about it.

Same here..My closest dealer is 60 miles away and the idea of making that drive and killing half a day just for an oil change is not very appealing..
 
My sister's engine seized because a quick lube shop put on the wrong filter, starving the engine of oil. I took my only Tacoma to a quick lube shop and they overtightened the filter, spraying oil all over my engine bay.

I will only do my own oil changes now. I hate changing oil, I just don't trust dipshit techs at the quick lube shops or the new techs at the dealer that get relegated to oil changes.

Just google jiffy lube put on wrong filter to see how common it is.
 
I've changed the oil on my own vehicles for more than 3 decades and will never use a quick lube place. My advice is find yourself a trustworthy local mechanic that will do the work.
 
I just sold the wife's 2004 4Runner and replaced it with a 2017 Limited The 04 had 197,000 miles and I did every oil change..I didn't even know the newer models do not use spin on filters before I bought it..Not sure I would have gotten if I had known that..I'll probably be taking it to the dealer but even then I can't be sure they change the filter?

Change it yourself man. You'll be grateful you did. Antman has a great write up with step by step directions should be you be at all bashful.
 
No, I always changed the oil myself on my 4th gens. I'm still having serious reservations about going to the stealership for my 5K and 10K maintenances....
 
I'm glad the dealership I bought from has lifetime oil changes for free. This was the biggest reason for me buying there and taking a $1,000 price difference from another dealership. The only thing is it doesn't transfer over to the next owner but I don't see that for the life of the vehicle. I plan on owning this thing forever and passing it down to my son when he's old enough to drive.

Check out the Jowett Performance replacement housing or the Motivx tools drain. Makes the process a lot easier IMO.

I run the Jowett housing on my Land Cruiser and just bought one for my 4Runner. So much easier to remove!

If I had a lift I would not hesitate..I'm too old to remove more on my back than a drain plug...

Understood.
I would then try and locate a dealership you trust. Of course you will never know until the work is done so you'll have to go with your gut.
 
I was nervous attempting the oil change on my '15 ES350 but it was by far one of the easiest I've ever done. Had it changed at the dealer once, and again at the dealership I bought my 4 Runner from. When I changed my oil, the housing looked pristine as if the filter had never been changed.

I had 24 months of free service for my 4 Runner and they wanted like over 100 bucks to change my oil. I am going to attempt it myself in a few hundred miles. May even consider getting one of those skid pans with the little window to make oil changes easier. I will be doing my own oil changes from now on.
 
I'm not sure why that group buy housing replacement is considered easier.... Seems like a potential discussion about denial of warranty. Maybe if socket wrenches didn't exist.....

I've been using this CTA heavy duty oil filter wrench, and it's been awesome.

Hearing people complain about the existing oil filter housing reminds me of infomercial blunders
