Oil filter change no skidplate removal required

Completed oil and filter change and found that I only need to remove 4 bolt to gain access to oil filter.

One photo taken from under vehicle looking toward the front of vehicle. Yellow arrow points towards front of vehicle. Red paint spots indicate the 4 bolts that need to be removed. After that the skidplate piviots forward toward the front of the vehicle like it's on a hinge or something.

The other photo has yellow arrow pointing at filter housing. There is plenty of room to get to and change filter.

I think our trail one is slightly different due to the KDSS...the dinky mesh guard sit's way further towards the front then the non-KDSS version it seems.

My 2010 Trail doesnt look like that either. Mines is like Antman's. Gotta remove the plastic cover to take off the 2 front bolts on the skid.

Mine is a 2012 SR5.

I have a front mounted hitch which obscures the view somewhat.

Mine has some kind of mesh going on in there.

If I want to remove the that plastic box and cover it comes out easily with I think it's four plastic pop type rivits.

I think our trail one is slightly different due to the KDSS...the dinky mesh guard sit's way further towards the front then the non-KDSS version it seems.

I do not think that would impede access or pivoting the skidplate


If anyone want some other photos please ask now while vehicle is still on lift.

Edit: I see them pointed out in red. Perhaps it is SR5 specific, but I will give this a try when I do my oil change next. Thanks!

It seems like a lot of BS just to change oil on these ( I'm a DIY'r )
What are you all dropping oil at for first change? and there after?
I had a 04' and 07' and it was easy.
Is this a totally different motor?
Is it any better than others?
I really didn't do much research on this since the last 2 were perfect vehicles
