Oil filter q's

I live three miles from a NAPA store and I have used their WIX filters (oil, air, and fuel) in every car and tractor I maintain since the store was built in 1977. I have never had a problem that could be attributed to engine lubrication. This includes a '74 Mercedes, an '85 BMW and a '94 Saab that all went over 220k miles. That's a LOT of cars and a LOT of filters. I trust WIX. Filtering oil is not rocket science.

Never had issue's with WIX filters ever. I actually keep them in my Parts Dept. for our Used car PDI's

I've only ever bought and used Mobil 1 oil filters with Mobil 1 full synthetic high mileage. Sitting at 160k miles on the clock and not a single leak.

what wix filter number would it be suitable for our rigs? cause i called napa and they wanted somewhere around the $70 dollar range for their gold filters and the same goes for the car quest blue filter..

i'm still debating if I should just order the ones off of ebay.. hard to beat for $40 an case.. but if i can get something better with a little more money... why not give it an try..

has anyone cut into the napa gold, car quest blue and oem filters to see what filter elements are used?

Some info on NAPA gold filters, some people claiming they're made by WIX.

OEM Toyota Filter Info
Some info on the OEM filters I use on my truck... they look almost the same inside as NAPA gold... so I stand behind my previous comment 100% just based on the fact that for ME it is much more simple and trusting knowing I get the right filter every time... and for around $4. Pick whichever you want though, I'll say it again, it's your truck.
And no, my truck is not factory, because certain things, not all, are designed with DOT and EPA regulations in mind, such as intakes and suspension etc... so things are purposely restricted, but when you look at aftermarket filters they are either clones or generic copies, some like fram going super cheap on the insides... so again I have no reason to use any other filter besides OEM. I had a 95 240SX that I swapped a 98 Silvia SR20DET into and I still chose to run OEM filters. My boost was stock 7lbs on stock turbo, with everything factory except exhaust, intake, and intercooler. Maybe if it would have had upgrades, running higher boost, and increases in oil pressure due to support such mods and increases in performance, then maybe a filter upgrade would have been considered. I digress, but it's the only way I can explain it. My engine on my 4runner has no major modifications, and even if it was supercharged or turboed I couldn't see myself using a different oil filter unless it was absolutely necessary. I posted my sources, so if you really think I'm just full of it or whatever, go buy your favorite filter and a Toyota OEM one, cut them open and compare. I'm just saying these things because I've already done it, not trying offend people. Maybe if somebody does it and takes some pictures to show us all your opinion and findings... otherwise without some evidence behind opinions it just seems like hearsay for the most part.

I rely more on my periodic laboratory used oil analyses from Blackstone Labs on MY oil from MY engine. Hardly hearsay. This is more to validate my OCI and verify the condition of my engine, but if there was a problem with filtration, I would see it. It certainly means more to me than chopping up perfectly good filters, although those reports are one of several reasons not to use FRAM orange cans of death.

I'm surprised you don't mention UOA's. How are yours?

And, by the way, there is absolutely no question that WIX makes NAPA filters. To use the phrase 'some people claiming they're made by WIX' is to demonstrate ignorance of the subject.

I'm not saying what you do is wrong. But neither is what I do and you have no right or evidence to say it is.

Wow, defensive much? I never said anything you said was wrong, but assuming I said it was is clearly a sign of communication ignorance. I never said my choice was better, I clearly stated facts along with MY personal opinion which clearly upsets you. I have already said what I'm gonna say, and if you don't like it, it doesn't mean I'm ignorant. I was clearly passing along information that wasn't mine so people could do their own due diligence on the subject, that's why I phrased it that way. If you can't get past the fact that not everyone agrees with your way of doing things I feel sorry for you, I'm just here to help the OP make a decision with other information and my personal opinion which I know not everybody will agree with. If you were here to help, instead of criticize, why haven't you already posted your information making comparisons? At least I posted something useful

I would go with the OEM filters. I'm not sure what your oil change interval is but I can tell you the OEM is fine for a 5,000 mile interval. You can use a D3 filter if you really want to.

I didn't ask you, or anyone else, to agree with my way. You said:

I see no reason whatsoever to stray from OEM specs on something as important as oil delivery to an engine's internals. While some filters may work (for who knows how long), why risk it? Buying aftermarket filters is like assuming you know more than Toyota engineers about their motor design... but in the end it comes down to it being your vehicle, so do whatever you want with it. I wouldn't even consider WIX, .....

You can post your opinions without denigrating those of others. I posted mine, without criticizing anyone else's approach. I think you should read your post again, before you object to my reaction to it. Then read my post again, before you accuse me of doing things I didn't do. I like your use of the phrase 'communication ignorance', for reasons I shall not go into.

For the second time, let's please get back to helping the OP, which is after all the point of these threads. I was opinionated, which you need to learn the meaning of, and if anyone here has been criticizing it's you. I'm not going to do what you are doing and pointlessly argue, because in the words of Mark Twain, "Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience"

You'll do well on this forum.

I'm running 5k oci with Mobil 1 synthetic and oem filter.. so far so good..

with the D3, did you held more oil than the D1?

thanks.

I've never used the D3 so I can't really answer that. I would imagine that the difference isn't too big. The D1 has plenty of filtering media so I wouldn't try to think too hard about this either.

From everything that I have seen the Toyota (Denso) filters don't actually filter all that well, they have a high flow rate but the filtering of particulates is rather subpar.

Test Pictures and Results - Oil Filtration Comparisons From the Workbench

I still like the Amsoil filter, filters out much smaller particles, is supposed to last up to 15,000 miles which I think is pushing it.
Their 15K filter are actually the exact same ones they used to say were 25K filters but found out that filtering 25,000 miles worth of oil is just plain to much filtering for such a small volume filter to hold in many engines.
Especially engines running rich.

Personally if you are someone that drives that much in under a year then you should just go with a bypass oil filter which will dramatically beat ANY small screw on oil filter by a massive margin. That way you get very high flow rates AND very VERY low particulates getting through.

My oil & filter rarely goes over 5000 miles in 1 year, the only exception was just over 8000 miles because of a very long trip in a very short time period.
So the 15K Amsoil filter changed at between 4-8K filters out more and smaller particulates with no danger of it ever going into bypass because its full.

I prefer to keep my engine as clean as possible, especially these Toyotas that are known to sludge.

so finally had time to stop by car quest and napa to take an look at the filters..

both are made by wix.. is stated on the box.. however though.. pricing for it was different..

napa, I was looking at $90 for an case of 10.. and they are individually wrapped instead of in the boxes. however though, over at Car Quest.. it was about the same but is sold in an case of 12 vs 10 at napa..

I came home and started looking for it online...

found an few places..

these guys have it at $3.58 each.. that's half the price at car quest for the same filter..

Wix 51348 Oil Filter - Everything Truck Parts

but shipping is a bit much.. for 12 filters, it was over $30 dollars.. so for $63 dollars shipped..

these guys have it for $3.37 an filter..

https://us-dc2-order.store.yahoo.ne...re_id=yhst-11081744829384&sectionId=ysco.cart

and shipping is reasonable.. to my house for an case of 12 filters.. is about $13 dollars.. so for $53 dollars... is not bad..

ebay has it too but is $53 for an case of 10 though..

I'm thinking about going with discount fleet supply.. after shipping is about $4.45 an filter.. still alot cheaper than the dealer at $5 dollar an filter.. but also better..

I am kinda curious how often you change your oil & filter @ 5K to buy CASES of filters?

That would last me about 12 years.

If you drive like 5,000 miles every 30-45 days type thing then it might be cheaper for you to buy a bypass filter, not to mention you can run your synthetic oil for a longer period without any concern.
You still need the regular oil filter but could extend the change interval and run your synthetic oil considerably longer.
There are not any small screw on oil filters that can even remotely compare to a good bypass filter.
They constantly filter the oil, never lets unfiltered oil by plus filters down particles so small that it literally keeps your oil clean.

This is what Blackstone Labs says about the bypass filter.

By-Pass Oil Filtration

Even though I only drive on average about 5000 miles per year (now) once we move to Oregon we plan on traveling and camping quite a bit so I plan to install a bypass filter on mine in about a year.

Logically this is how all engines should come from the factory IMO.

I change the oil 4 times an year, I log about 18k-20k an year with my rig..

I'm thinking about sending my oil in for an lab report and see where I'm standing..

Wow lots of driving.
It might just save you some money to get the best 100% synthetic oil you can find and get a bypass filter.
You could cut your oil changes down to at very most twice a year.
If most is highway miles, then really once a year with the right oil and bypass filter.

yeah.. around this time last year is when I put the duratrac's on and from then.. I logged about 15k miles..

however though, my miles are mix of city/freeway + wheeling trips..

is not too bad though, when I first started changing the oil.. it would take forever.. but now.. is a lot better..

Update on Carquest Products

Old post but:
I'm sure it's mentioned on this site somewhere but just to let people know Advance Auto bought out Carquest so some filters mentioned here are cheaper. It's at the month's end right now so the codes change in only a couple days so no reason to post links here now but just google advance auto coupon codes before checkout and you'll see several codes.

I suggest to everyone before buying anywhere online these days to google around for coupon codes as most online stores run several deals throughout the year.
Trust me it pays to try it, I saved over $60 on my new Wilton vise from Zoro a few months back & got free shipping to boot.
I've used Advance Auto codes over 3 years and saved a bunch of money over that time. The TRT30 for 30% off your entire order over $50 is very common there as I've used it a whole lot. :bravo:
Sure wish RockAuto done it more but their prices are just stupid low sometimes anyway I'm not complaining here. But hey' we'll sure take free shipping Rock?...hint hint.
