why do some oil filters differ in length from others? dosen't the
length give the filter more or less filtering capabilities.it seems
like every time i buy any oil filter other than the factory toyota
filter it always comes in the same diameter but shorter.

Anytime you hold the diameter constant and increase the length, you also increase the volume. But we are not talking about a whole lot here. IMO the OEM filter is great. I would never use anything else. I buy a case of ten on the web for under $ 4/ea.
 
I thought the OEM filters made in Asia have an anti-backflow valve that keeps the oil up inside the engine instead of falling back in the crankcase after turned off. This is the main reason I have been purchasing the OEM filters instead of any aftermarket.
 
To the best of my knowledge, 99% of all filters have a check valve in them. This is because a specific filter is usually shared between different engines and different engines have different filter mounting positions. So if a filter was only to be use with the screw-on side pointing straight up, then there would be no need for a check valve.

Oil filters help protect your engine by trapping dirt and other contaminants while allowing the oil to flow to the engine. Genuine Toyota Oil Filters are designed specifically for your Toyota engine. Features of the Genuine Toyota Oil Filters include:

...are both the same size.

We both use (V8) Toyota OEM - 90915-YZZD3
...because it's larger, therefore more filtration.
