oil leak from cam end plugs

On my 1998 4runner, do I have to remove valve covers to replace the cam end plugs? if not any suggestions to get out the plugs. tried using pocket screwdriver to pry it out.

You better be ready to change the timing belt to get to the cam seals.

And no, the valve cover does not have to come off.

I would think the proverbial pocket screwdriver needs to be traded in for a seal plug removal tool, or at least a fine flat blade screwdriver.
