oil leak on oil filter housing.

Hello to all,

question please and needs a second opinion from experts. I have a 99 4runner 2wd, auto. I noticed when I change oil and filter that there is oil leak around the oil filter, housing. After i changed oil, I see the car leaves a few oil drops on the ground when parked. So I decided to do an engine wash for me to see better where the oil is coming from. Now this morning, I see that the oil is coming from the filter housing.
The question is, is this normal on a 106,000miles?
Anyone had this problem before?
Any other parts I really need to look at closely? (too many parts there blocking my view)

Hello to all,

question please and needs a second opinion from experts.

I change the oil on my vehicles, and only one time did I have a leak from the filter housing ('97 Subaru Legacy). I removed the filter, cleaned it up and re-installed it, but the leak returned.

I drove another vehicle to the parts store, bought a new filter (different make), cleaned off the housing and installed the filter. It never leaked another drop. For whatever reason, the first filter/gasket didn't seat properly (I was 100% sure that it was the proper filter for the engine).

I am not sure exactly where your leak is coming from. However, my first piece of advice would be to try a new filter - unless the leak is coming from somewhere else on the housing where it is obvious that it is not the filter leaking.

Disclosure: I am certainly no expert.

Seems like the leak is coming between the block and the filter housing. I have changed filter twice already, and third one i bought is from toyota, along with the o-ring gasket, **by looking at the diagram from the dealer, seems like there is a rod/tube in there that has o-ring as well(unfortunately they do have that part in stock)
Since I am there and thinking about pulling it out will go ahead and replace both.

The oil filter adaptor or housing might have an O-ring on the engine block side. I just replaced one on my Jeep. No more leaks.

changed the o-ring type gasket and the inner o-ring, no moe leaky for days now..Weeeeee!

hossmaster, sorry bro, I didnt think of taking any pics. I was quite in a hurry doing it on a Sat morning. There were only 2 nuts and a bolt that holds it under the exhaust manifold on 4bangers. When you pull it out, there is like about two inches tube sticking out of the block for oil passage i guess, and there where the o-ring is located. Didnt have to jack-up the runner. A long extension along with a wobble joint works well. I finally got a use of my pressure washer this time around.
