Oil Pressure Issue

I haven't had oil pressure readings for a while now. I have put about 200 miles on it since my gauge went to 0. I'm thinking it could be the sending unit but Oreillys wants $40 for it. I heard somewhere that rockauto has it for $5 but I can't find it. Has anyone ordered it online? Or does anyone have the part #? If I can replace it for under $15 then I'd rather do that before I tear into it and replace the oil pump. Thanks for input :D

Had the same thing happen in my `94. it ended up being the oil pressure sensor wire. got a new pigtail and connector clip for 15 bucks at the stealership. look next to your oil filter for a wire dangling free of the pressure sensor (V6)

I have the 22RE sorry for not clarifying. But yes I was worried it was a fault in the wiring somewhere. As far as I can tell the wires and connections are good (pulled the cluster and the sending unit)
 
Have you tried WD-40? When my engine stopped working I sprayed the engine bay with a full can of WD-40 and it started working again. I would think the same thing would help you because there is oil in the engine and when I did it it fixed the engine.
 
I would verify that you have some sort of oil circulation before you destroy your engine by driving it around. Does it sound like its not getting oil? A $40 sensor is cheaper than a new engine.
 
Oreillys ought to have an oil pressure tester you can borrow. If the pressure is good, you could probe the connector on the sender to see if it's putting a signal towards the gauge.

You have the SR5 cluster, right? And the big spaceship-looking oil sender? If you use the wrong sender you'll burn out the gauge.

My oil pan is leaking pretty bad anyways so I'm gonna pull that either way. I'm debating about doing the timing cover too cause I believe it has a slow leak too. Would it be a good idea to replace pumps while I'm in there? Maybe a timing kit too..? I know its been a while since anyone has done work to the engine.
 
If you're going to pull the pan anyway it's a great time to do the timing cover, and if you're going to pull the timing cover it's a great time to do water pump and oil pump. Have a look at the timing set before you decide to replace it - if you've already got steel guides and they look ok and the chain isn't stretched, leave it.

Did you spray the can of wd-40 into the engine through the fill cap?

Hey man you never know. My buddy used to have a 1985 toyota tercel hatchback and he ran that thing with no oil (terrible leak) for 3 months. Never made a different sound than when it had oil and he drove it everywhere. Sold it to his brother and it still runs today to my knowledge. Just goes to show you how dependable a toyota is. I have another buddy with a 1991 ford festiva and a half a quart low and it makes terrible engine noises so there's that.

NO.

He's suggesting spraying WD-40 which stands for "Water Displacement, 40th Formula", on electrical connectors in the engine bay, to displace any water which might be shorting and/or corroding electrical connections.

How do I check if the chain is stretched? It seems loose when I have the valve cover off but I was told the tensioner tightens up when the engine is running. I'd rather have steel guides just for piece of mind

Download the FSM if you havent already, and test the oil pressure sender. Also check for loose wires. Lets start crossing things out before we just keep randomly guessing.

Yeah, the chain has a tensioner that runs off oil pressure. You check the chain itself by measuring the distance between links, you'll want a micrometer. Harbor Freight has a cheap one that will suffice.

The chain should never be loose on the drive side (right side, as you face the engine bay) unless you've rotated the crank shaft backwards. There will be slack on the opposite side, and that's what the tensioner is there for, to take up that slack. If you don't have steel guides and don't know when the timing set was replaced last, I'd make a point of doing it next time you've got the cover off.

Crankshaft bearings I'd call a solid 5 out of 5, just because of the consequences if you get it wrong. It is possible to drop the pan, unbolt the caps, slide the bearings out, and slide new ones in. I don't recommend it, because the precision measurements needed to get the right tolerances are hard to achieve flat on your back under the truck with oil dripping in your face. The right way is to pull the motor and put it on a stand, and if you're going to do that you might as well rebuild the entire thing. Which isn't a bad idea, especially if you can scrounge a spare block and work on it at your leisure.

But I agree with Hyde, I think you're borrowing trouble at this point. See if you can borrow an oil pressure tester, just to verify that you do have pressure. Once you've done that, test your sender and if it's good, check for the same signal at the wiring on the back of the cluster. If that's good, replace the gauge in your cluster (never done that, might be easier to replace the entire cluster?).

And there we have it.. Looks like good pressure to me. I'll drop the $40 for a new sensor and I think that should do it. Now the question of replacing the pumps anyways while I'm in there or not bother and hope they last at least another 10k ...

I put an SR5 motor in my DX. Wonder if that's why my oil light is acting crazy??:bash:
 
Good to see you have pressure!

There are 2 different types of senders. One for the SR5 gauge and one for the dummy light.

If you use the wrong sending unit with the wrong gauge, your gonna have a bad time.

So there's about a half inch of slack on the driver side of the chain.. I'll be ordering a timing kit today hahah
