Oil pressure sensor - OBD-II output - Longish read

Long read, but I wanted to make sure everyone knows my timeline. My 97 with 187k sit in the driveway for a month due to a busted water pump. It was dark when I got home in the evening, rained or was too cold to change it on the weekends. After I got our garage cleaned out and 4unner in, I replaced the timing belt, water pump, pulleys, radiator, and flushed the system per Timmy the Toolman's video. I did not change the oil pump.

After everything was back together, I also did an oil change, added seafoam, and Wix filter. I craked it up for 10 minutes to operating temp and then took a drive around the neighborhood. That's when the oil light came on. I assumed it was from the seafoam cleaning the sludge which may have dropped to the bottom of the motor and clogged the oil pickup. I did another oil change. 5W-30 oil and reused the Wix filter as it still looked clean. The Seafoam had helped clean the oil as it was black again.

As some had noted here on the form, I purchased an oil pressure gauge. However, I can not get the dam oil sensor out. I had read it was a 24mm deep well. Even after taking the oil filter back off, the socket will not go over the electronic part at all. I tried to break it loose with a crescent wrench but it will not budge. So a couple of questions.

1. How the hell do people get the oil sensor plug out?
2. Will the OBD-II port report oil pressure? I have a cheap bluetooth reader and use Torque. It doesn't show within the app that it can read oil pressure. It may be the crappy reader I'm using. Hoping someone can give some good tips. I'm ready to set it on fire and roast some marshmallows.

A 7/8” deep socket or wrench will work also.

You put 6 quarts in and drained 6 quarts out? No oil leaks etc to cause the low oil pressure?

Yes, 6 in 6 out. I'll try and see if I can get the 7/8 socket on it.

Removing the alternator really opens up the area to work on it.

I used my O2 sensor socket which is 7/8” and deep.

The oil pressure switch is super little where it screws into the block 1/8 BSPT I believe. Be very careful not to snap it off in there.

The oil pressure switch is just an on/off switch that works the light in the dash. OBD does not read it.

Your oil pressure gauge likely comes with a 1/8 NPT end. Not quite a fit for the 4runner but you might be able to get a thread or two in which will be enough for what you are doing. Just don't crank it in.

How Much sea foam did you put in?

Maybe change the filter and try that. The dirty side of the filter is inside the can which you can't see. The inside should always look clean.

That's not a sender, it's just a pressure switch to turn the warning light on.

I do not use sea foam in the oil then drive it.
I do the oil changes every 3500-4ooo miles using dino oil then drive it so it is at normal temp,,, then drain all the oil out for about 45 min.. I removed the valve covers because of a leak not one spot of sludge..
I also some times cut open the oil filters. 30 yrs old.

I didnt put much in there. Honestly cant remember. I think half a can maybe. Going to try a new filter next as well as still trying to get the oil pressure sender off so I can do a pressure test.

I was finally able to get some time to check the pressure with a gauge. At idle the pressure held around 18psi. However, at 3000rpm the pressure dropped to 10 psi. Bad oil pump or oil pickup clogged? I used 5-30 oil.

How's the oil level? (check 2+ mins after engine stop on a level surface) Make sure it isn't overfilled.
Replace the oil filter, just in case.
Any damage to the oil pan (dents)?

The oil level was fine. I had a newer oil filter on. I had changed the oil a couple of times in the past week trying to determine if there was crud in the oil. Pan is damaged. I did treat the engine with some seafoam which may have loosened up some crud. The oil pickup may be clogged, however, I read that is a pain to get the oil pan off since I have a 4x4. I haven't been able to find a good guide or video on it.

If the pan is dented, it can partially block the oil pickup. Oil level too high can foam up the oil (not sure what level that happens on the 5vz though). That's where I was going with those questions.

And yeah, the front diff (or engine, I suppose) has to come out to get the oil pan off.

As extra info, the oil pump is VERY reliable. I have never heard of a problem with one on a 5vz (or generally other older Toyotas either), other than maybe a leak.

No, I did not. I had some ups and downs in life like most of us. It caused my oil issue to go on the back burner and it's been sitting ever since. I just recently purchased a new oil pump and pickups. I finally have my garage clean enough to roll her back in. However, my wife decided to fall 2 days ago and break her 1st, 2nd, and 3rd metatarsal's in her foot. So we will see how much time this takes away from tearing into the issue again. I will post as soon as I know more.

It had been running for 10 minutes or so. The engine was good and hot when I got back under the hood.
