Oil Pump Replacement

If my oil pump is leaking, must I absolutely replace it or can I live with it? I'm being quoted $3800 to replace it and I've put so much money into this car it's excruciating. I really don't know if the leak has gotten much worse but there is definitely plenty of new oil coating all the components. Is there anything I can do you can think without having to replace it?

Is there anyone in Colorado that can help me replace it?

I've been completely financially drained by this car. Thank you much.

Where in Colorado are you located?

It's not common for oil pumps on the 3.4 to leak. How was your leak diagnosed? I wouldn't suspect the oil pump unless there were other symptoms (like low oil pressure). It could be the front crank seal or the oil pan gasket coming from that some location. Crank seal is easier to swap, but the oil pan gasket means dropping the front diff - which you'd have to do to get to the oil pump as well.

If it's not loosing a tremendous amount of oil, regardless of where the leak is, you can always continue to drive the truck and just be sure to keep an eye on the oil level. Some folks even consider minor oil leaks just to be built-in rust proofing.

O ring

It's the O-ring (part number 96721-24020) between the pump and engine block. I too have the same issue and it leaks right next to the oil pressure sending unit. Took me some time to diagnose. I decided to leave it alone as it needs the timing belt and sprocket to come off to pull the oil pump out.

I might try conventional oil instead of fully synthetic oil on the next oil change.

I do not know why the 3rd gen drains your money: Mine is trouble free other than this oil leak.

Clean up the area as best as you can to help you determine the source of the leak. It could be a camshaft seals or the crankshaft seal leaking which is a lot less work. The labor for an oil pump removal and resealing is expensive because the oil pan has to come off. To get the oil pan off, you have to remove the front differential.

Even if you do determine the leak is coming from the oil pump, is the leak really bad? How much oil do you have to add over a 5,000 mile interval? If it's not that bad, you could just live with it. Oil is affordable. The oil leak can be messy, but if money is tight, deal with the mess.

The only thing I can add is that sometimes on leaks you can jump from 5w -30 to 10w -30 will slow down the leaks some.

hey nissanh , how did you ultimately diagnose it was the O-ring on the oil pump, did you use a oil dye?
