I was picking up some Valvoline High Milage oil at the parts store and I asked the guy what weight oil he recomended. He said to try a 10w40 because of the high milage (205k).

That is the first time I have heard of using a heavier oil because of high milage. But it is also the first time I have had a high milage vehicle.

What are your thoughts?

Using 10w40 should not be a recommendation based on mileage. Stick with the recommended 5w30 or 10w30 if that is all they offer in the high mileage version. The only thing the 10w40 will do is shear down quicker (more viscocity index improvers) and create more drag internally in the engine (read: slightly worse gas mileage). Unless your engine is consuming oil at an alarming rate using the Xw30, stick with it.

I have 163k on my 00.
I run 0w30 in mine with no problems.

They do recommend higher viscosity in older engines. More stable and less likely to leak and burn off. I used to use 10W40 in older engines and I was told for my 92 Honda, the newer engines don't like the higher viscosity. 10W40 is way too high for the 92 engine. My dealer said you should never use it. So, I used 5W30 in the winter and 10W30 in the summer. I still have the Honda, now with 220,000 miles and I decided to stick with 10W30 all the time. It burns around 3/4 quart per oil change and 10W30 helps and I have less burn off.

My 4Runner has 103,000 miles and I will stick with 5W30 for the time being. I would say, if you burn a little oil between your oil change, they you might want to go to 10W30, but if it seems OK, stick with 5W30. And, I would not go with 10W40, unless you engine is on it's last leg and is burning oil by the mile.

So, if they have high mileage 10W30 oil you may want to use it, if they don't stick with normal oil with lower viscosity.

You think I would know better than to listen to some kid at auto zone. I have had the 4r for more than a week so I don't know how much oil it is burning if any. I put the 10w40 in today (befor I read this thred). On the old oil (I don't know what weight or when it was changed), I got 180 miles out of 10gal of gas.

I put in some stp fuel system cleaner along with the new oil and a new oem air filter. I was expecting an increase in fuel economy but if it stays the same or goes down I will know why.

I picked up some new plugs and fuel filter too.

One Q: Is there a clean method to removing the oil filter?
I had oil spill everywhere.
