I have grown up on Ford trucks. My friends, on the other hand, are Toyotas. Well, I decided to jump the ol YO bandwagon and am yet to be impressed. The first thing it did was break.

I got the problem fixed. (head gasket) Don't ask how much, I'm still suffering from PTSD from it.
NOW the EGR temp sensor is on the blink, and what I found was a wire sticking out of the connector apparently going to nowhere. There is no ground wire anywhere from what I can see.
Does anyone have any ideas on the wiring schem for this little unit? Or maybe even disable it? It's going through an insane amount of gas, and I just want to fix the thing. Sorry guys, but this will be my first...and LAST Toyota! :mad:

Well, gee, welcome to the Toyota lovers forum...Theres diagrams a plenty round here just search them out. Guessing your fords never broke down?:peace:
 
LOL I hate to say it, but no. They never did. I kept them maintained, and drove 'em hard. I changed out gaskets when I thought it was needed and they were simple to do. This 4runner has me baffled and I'm about ready to fall off the wagon trying to get this thing working right. When they said gold star service for these things, they weren't kidding. I have looked high and low for just a simple wiring diagram for the sensor and have found zilch. I'm hoping someone somewhere knows what I can do just to get it done and done right. ford < toyota. the minor issues you are having are minimal in comparison to what a ford will hand you, besides being sh|t off the lot. And my family has numerous lincoln navigators (is that the best ford can do?) i will never buy one. probably never buy american.:roadkill:

patience grasshopper. Being a 22re, it will be an easy and cheap fix, whereas a good fix for a ford is a whole new bag of bullshat. Ive yet to meet a re**** who would pick a ford over a toyota, unless they were rich enough to make a ford run like a toyota does (not as yours does now, but will).
What shade of neck do you have? Bright ford red or functional yota red

If it's so cheap and easy, how come no one knows squat about it? There's yer bullshat sparky. I even called a stealership, and at $125 for just the dyno check, I'll stick a 12 gauge in the gas tank first. 22r-e has left me cold. It has no guts, I can't even tow with the thing! No thanks
 
if you did any research, that is how it would pay off, but hey MATE ignorance is bliss. somesay hindsight is 20/20 and you will probably realise such in the next so many months. Drive your ford like you stole it, because hopefully you did.
 
LOL Thanks..I came up with that too, and dowloaded the manual. It's not the greatest, but I'll try and make it work. I'm just trying to figure out if there's a ground wire that goes to the frame, or the sensor itself. I'll figure it out. You've been a great help. Thanks! :)
 
Nah. I never take the easy way out. I do a job and get it done right. This was where I was told to go to for help, and that's what I'm doing. Granted, this sucker about glides on the road, and I can barely hear the engine. It purrs. We'll see. Later brah. :) Thanks anyway T
 
Ok well first off we don't need to rip into this guy for trying to convert to toyotas. Would any of us buy a ford because we heard they were amazing? I'd say no. At least give him some credit for trying. No need to bash anyone, especially since we should be encouraging people to stick with 4runners.
Now onto the problem, I think your EGR temp sensor knocked loose one of its wirs. While there aren't any wiring diagrams, the picutres of the sensors are just a connector.
Here is a picture of a connector for a egr temp sensor for a 22re. All of the wire go into the connector and I think yours just got knocked loose. I'm sure you could just reattach it and be fine.

Excellent! There's just one problem. The connector is missing, and there's just a wire going into a harness under the EFI intake. Looks like it was a hotwire bypass. That connector is nowhere to be found in the engine compartment anywhere. Where does it connect into? THANKS! You just made my day! :) Thanks for the welcome as well. I got a good price on this thing, and I found out the hard way why. The guy had jury rigged the head gasket with a cheap FelPro and RTV'd the hell out of the rest. Cracked the head in three places and it's been downhill ever since. Once I got the head taken care of, I found the wire sticking out of the connector for the temp sensor. Looks like it was soldered in place with a wire snaking down under the intake into a wire harness. I wish I could take a photo of it and show what I mean. Would be easier to do that. Too dark for now but I'll try in the am before work. Thanks again! Now I know what to look for. :) You da man. LOL

Its not the greatest, but may help out. It sounds like you got a McGyver 22re and it isn't working out so great. Don't get too discouraged because while the 22re is a little gutless, a good running one will last you forever. I would try to find a part yard and pull temp sensor from it or got to the classifieds and see if anyone has one.
 
Truth be told it only seems gutless cause its in a ton of SUV, I had the 22re in my old 83 Celica 5spd RWD, and could roast em through 2nd gear, donuts, beat alot of newer cars too, but that is a much lighter car. That engine is by far the strongest cheapest to fx Ive ever owned, I think once you get past the previous owners neglect uyoull enjoy it...good luck!
 
Thanks for the help guys. :) I had found that link in Yotatech as well, but the wire is not seen in the photo. Go figure so I moved on. I agree that it's gutless..It's in TWO tons of Toyota! I work at a solid waste management scalehouse, and I weighed it. The sucker weighs at about 3700lbs! That's a heavy rig for a 4 banger to be hauling around. And four wheel drive on top of that. I guess that's why the American makers didn't put 4WD on four bangers. Only six and up. I'm going to be calling a boneyard in the am and see if the import section has any clues. It's still running smooth and quiet. No overheating, thank goodness, and can barely hear it running at all. After all the work put into it, new head, gasket and changed the timing chain and water pump just for good measure. All Toyota parts of course. ;) I had a few brews when it was done. LOL I'll keep checking back to see if anything turns up. Thanks again guys. Appreciate it :)
 
Ok, I got the error code and it's 71. Big surprise there. I'll be taking a photo of the hotwire later on tonight. From what I have seen, just about everyone takes of the temp sensor and caps the thing off. Is that what I should do as well? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks again. :)
