Okki's Build Thread

Okki -

Really appreciate your build thread. I've got a 2012 Limited and want to move toward more of an off road look and performance. I want to start with 17" wheels and much more aggressive tires. Do you anticipate any issues with the XREAS suspension system when I go to the more TRD type tires and wheels? I don't have the $$ for a suspension lift at this time. Thanks. Also, if you can share any photos of your finished 4Runner that would be great.

Thanks for the kind words TackleToy. XREAS should not be an issue as long as you stay with the same outer diameter tire. My TRD rims and Cooper ATP tires are the same outer dimension as the OEM 20 inch Alloys and P-rate tires.

Suspension only really comes into play when you start adding a lot of weight. Honestly, I would probably not do a lift if I were to do it again. Some decent skid plates and a good spotter/driver will get you to the same places with less cost. Bumpers, dual (big) battery, fridge, RTT, etc also all add weight. So suspension is more likely going to be driven by weight than the need for height.

Thanks for the guidance / advise Okki. Your Limited looks fine and that is the direction I am heading. My 2012 Limited has a front air dam / air diverter along with a funky plastic cover just behind the air dam that may be there to cover the oil pan or??? Anyway my assumption is that it is all there to enhance the aerodynamics at higher speed. The problem is that it further reduces the already limited approach angle. I'd like to get a little more clearance up front by removing this stuff. I've noticed that the SR5s and Trail editions don't have it, so any feedback of this change? Would you recommended or not? Thanks again.

The lower airdam comes off pretty easily. No issues if you remove it. On the limited the sideskirts come significantly lower than on the SR5/TE as well. I replaced the fender flares and side skirts with Trail Edition (TE) units that were body color painted to match. Or you can trim the rocker panels down. This mainly becomes an issue for you if you want to install rock rails.

If the approach angle is your main issue, you will be replacing the bumper. Although I've found the OEM bumper to allow for more than what my pucker factor allowed for....

I ran up this hill after the FJ. Gave me some thought before hitting the gas.

Hi Okki, I’m brand new to the forum and I’ve been searching your thread (Okki’s build thread) along with Harper7’s (TE Parts Needed to Convert SR5/Limited Exterior 2010-13)
trying to find an answer to my question, but so far no luck—so here goes (I hope it hasn’t been answered somewhere and I missed it):
Is it possible to replace only the stock fender flares on my 2010 SR5 with factory TE flares?
I really want to do the whole conversion described in Harper7’s thread but I just bought new TRD wheels and I’m kinda at the end of the budget for now, hence hoping that the fender flare only swap is an option for now.
Thank you,

Thanks for the reply Okki. I like the comment about the pucker factor kicking in before the approach angle gives up. So true!!

The Hella's dont have a deep "air horn" type sound. They have more of a shrill car-horn-like sound. There is no way to change the tone based on wiring. You may want to look into an air horn. you can get ones that wire in like a regular horn, but spin up a little compressor when engaged to blow the horn.

After 9 years of building, driving and excitement, my wife and I have decided to put the 4Runner up for sale. This build thread show the level of detail, commitment and craftsmanship that have gone into this vehicle.

The "For Sale" post is listed in the "For Sale" section (linked below).

Thanks, Okki.
Do you have any recommended brand for air horns?
I don't, but there are plenty on Amazon. You may need to wire it directly to the battery and trigger a relay from the horn wire. You could try the horn wire directly first and mess with a relay if that doesn't work.

The problem is that that the front fender flares from the TE have a mud guard they tie into. I don't recall if the SR5 or Limited rocker panels can interface with that. I would replace the rockers at the same time. I did not replace the rear fender flares on my limited.

Sold and picked up by it's new owners

So today the truck drove off to its new home in CA. Had a great time meeting the new owners and glad to see it go to a home where it will be enjoyed like we did.

Okki,

Bought my 2020 4Runner Limited in September and found your posts while looking for Shrockworks sliders installs on this forum, thank you for those very informative posts.

I previously owned a '93 4Runner and then a '96, and finally came back to the fold with this 2020. What are your plans, do you plan to get another 4Runner? I hope I own mine at least as long as you have owned yours.

Best wishes for whatever you decide to do for your next vehicle!
