Yep. It looks pretty cool. I did a little research and it sounds very cool but also poorly marked and potentially dangerous. If we got a big group together I'd love to give it a try some day.... Or at least part of it. The entire thing is supposedly over 100miles long!

Honestly you need to "carry" on the k-trail. Read about lots of iffy situations. Lots of drugs (meth) are manufactured and distributed around that area.

Anyone in OKC interested in getting there concealed (open) carry liecense let me know I'm going to do mine later this summer.

Yep it is just called a handgun license now...already packing the heat as well! Took my class at H&H several years ago.

The part about the locals lighting a fire in the trail would freak me the fu@* out. I mean damn, shots were fired!
I've done some backpacking near Mena, AR which is in the same National Forest. Around 2003, after 2 days on the trail we ran into some locals, and suffice it to say, they were spooky bastards that mades us all feel uneasy. My normally docile, mild mannered labrador went completely batshit when we came across these dudes; he went from a low growl the instant we saw them to full out attack dog. He damn near drug me along the ground trying get at these guys. The dog never acted like that before or since and he's 12 now. Me and my buddies didn't sleep much that night.

Sorry for the rambling memory...I'd totally be down for some K trail action with several well armed mates. Not in the summer though. If I even think about SE Oklahoma in the summer I can feel the ticks crawling on me.

I miss H&H. That place is amazing. We don't have anything like that here in Tulsa.

Yeah. I read that article..... Pretty scary stuff. I also PMed the author. No way I would stay the night out there. It sounds like a we would need a large (armed) group and at least one person who's done the trail before. I here it is very poorly marked and dangerous off of the main trail (which becomes private land). I contacted the Ouchita NF ranger station and they sent me some maps but they're pretty confusing. They say in the summer it's too overgrown.
 
I have a CCW and a large rifle collection, so I can arm the caravan decently. If we go at night, ill pick up some NOGs too. Just need someone to bring the body armor and then we can call the DEA and see if they want to ride along. I'm always up for some community service.
 
We should look at hiring the Central Overland - guys to lead us on a trip. They've done it a few times and have some other connections too. I bet we would need about 8-10 vehicles. Shouldn't be hard if we get our group then post on the fj forum too.

Ok, but lets limit everyone to 7 mags each. We want to be reasonable hear. How much would it be to hire a helicopter for FO?

Well I figure if the DEA rides along, then maybe they'll lend us a helicopter or a drone at the very least. Where was that 4runner up-armor thread again?
 
So when are we hitting up K-trail for real? I'll be out of town the next couple of weekends but I'm ready to do this.

I would be willing to go, but it will take some major planning. I've also heard the trail is too overgrown in the summer. I personally would only be available to go early fall or spring 2014. I tried to plan a trip for late spring 2013 but once I got the maps from the Forest Service I realized it was way too confusing and too much work for me to plan it alone. There is a vitrual maze of trails and primitive roads throughout the area going on for miles and miles. It was really hard for me to tell what was the "K-trail" itself. I already have a few friends (one with a Wrangler and one with a FJ) who are interested. BUT no one wants to put in the work to plan a route.

I also talked to a few people who've done trips, visited, or grown-up in the area and they strongly recommend we go with someone who's done the trail before.....preferably recently because much of the land in the area has sold to private hunting clubs, etc. resulting in closed trailheads, and other confusing/ risky situations.

I'd be happy to mail you some copies of the maps if you want to PM me. Or better yet, find us an experienced "guide" and I'm in!
 
I was on the Disney trip today and it was great! Ran some good trails and watched a tricked out first gen and 97 landcruiser hit some crazy obstacles. I'll try to get some photos and video up tomorrow. Also check the link for the thread mentioned earlier, there's a couple pics up already.
 
I was down there this weekend in my FJ. I headed backwards (to the east) from the three sticks monument. I didn't make it very far past all the communication towers before the trail narrowed to the point I was starting to worry about paint. The other direction from the monument across the street was passable and we ran that.
