old lady needs help

I have 89 Toyota 4Runner SR5. It's had a hard life and I don’t want to see her go to the junk yard in the beyond...
Not knowing if the dash oil gage is correct but it has been dropping down a mark off and on for about 3 months. I add oil and while at idol the needle drops but driving, it's ok. A light lifter rattle now and then but not bad.
Just last week the gage dropped down a quarter so I added 2qts. Drove a short distance, came to a stop light, smoke starting rolling, pulled away from light and the engine rattled and blue-white smoke rolled like crazy! Scared me so I went home. Idol in the parking lot it was ok but not while driving 25 - 30 mph...is this a blown head gasket?

The oil gauge shows oil pressure, not how much is in it. If it's smoking you probably overfilled it. Better drain it all out since you probably never changed it anyway and put in the correct amount of fresh oil.

:doh: That's funny stuff.

It's normal for an older engine to have a bit low oil pressure at idle. Do change the oil pronto however... you over filled it. And as mentioned, the gauge is PRESSURE not level of oil.

And change the muffler bearings while your at it... Metric Only!

And be sure to use only OEM metric muffler bearings, not those low cost generic ones on Amazon that come with bare wires and make you cut the connectors off the old ones and splice on to the new ones so they will plug in correctly.
Actually I thought this was an early April Fools Day joke at first but since I know some women drivers it might actually be real.

Varvel16, it does sound like you've got some motor trouble. As noted, the gauge on your dash is oil pressure, not oil level - low pressure CAN mean you're low on oil, but it doesn't have to, and like they said you may have overfilled it. The smoking is problematic as well - that could just mean you splurged some oil up through your dipstick tube, or it could be worse. You said the motor "rattled like crazy", so I suspect worse.

I don't think this is the right time for you to learn how to diagnose and repair motor trouble, do you have a mechanic you can take the truck to?
