Old man having problems

I just traded my 2001 4runner SR5 in on a 2003 4runner limited.
This was a used with only 9k miles on it so I don't know if the previous owner did something.

The radio has the RDS / Traffic / Type , programs on it. Everytime when on FM (not FM1 or FM2) and hit the Type button it only comes back as Rock / Easy Listening. I have hit the RDS button many times but only get the 2 choices from above. The owners manual said I would get many more like Jazz, Country, Rap etc...

I test drove a 2004 4runner and got all the choices. So either this old man can't read the manual or the radio is broken. Can anyone give me something to try or should I take it back to the dealer.

Thanks,
gta

You only get these stations if someone in your area is broadcasting them. Since apparently no one is doing that, you cannot select them on your radio. In my opinion this is utterly useless, but does allow Toyota to put more buttons on your radio. More buttons is always good.

I drove a new 2004 4runner from the Toyota dealer and the Type button worked. But with mine I don't get all the stations. I guess I will visit the dealer to see what they have to say.

Don't go to the stealer for such a small thing. I got the same type of stereo and my RDS button hardly ever does what I want it to do. Good thing I already know what type of radio stations I want to listen to.

Where I live, only three radio stations that I listen to actally broadcast anything for the RDS. On these stations, I get the name of the song that is being played.

Just afew weeks ago I think that part of the radio started working, it use to display the radio station like 92.3 now all of a sudden it will display the name of the song, alomg with the station:)

The RDS system only works if the station sends out the information on the analog signal. A lot of stations do not have this equipment. Here in California where I live, it's about 50% of the stations support RDS. Another thing is that if you have a weak analog signal to the station, the RDS information my not come up at all or come up garbled on your display.

Thanks for everyones reply. The next time Iam back at the dealer picking up parts(oil filter, air filter etc...) I will ask a service tech about this.

I know when I was their the 2004 4runner worked and mine don't. So that tells me that the radio has something wrong with it. Their maybe a way just to reset it, but if not they will have to give me another one.

I don't really care about this feature but down the road if I go to sell the vehicle and the person who' s looking at it might want it to work.

Thanks again,
gta
