OME BP-51's vs King's

I am starting to consider lift options for future mods. These seem to be two of the best options currently on the market, but I am not seeing much about the BP-51's on 4Runner's. Does anyone here have them on their 4Runner or do any of you have any input or opinions about how they stack up against the King's?

Are you driving a 5th Gen?

I am running a 6112 right now and I wanted to try the BP-51 on my 4th Gen pretty bad because I wanted the internal bypass and tuning capability, but they don't make them for my truck. For that reason I will be going King shocks on my 4th Gen when I get around to upgrading.

Kings are far superior to BP51s in every way especially if you are getting the reservoir versions.

What about the King shocks put it ahead? Build quality, capability, feature? They both look like high quality large body shocks with RR.

I know the Kings are available with RR and adjusters, but I thought the adjusters only controlled compression. Not sure if it's an internal bypass shock?

I do like the BP-51 features... independent adjustments for compression and rebound seem nice for tuning a Overland style build where you would be dealing with loading up the truck with a lot of weight. I see more tuning to be had with the OME.

I like the King shocks better if you are into speed or are a desert person, which I am... but it seems like the only way to get a bypass shock is to get a secondary in something like a LT setup. At that point, yes, id consider the King pair to be miles ahead in both capability and adjustability.

But apples to apples, 1to1 with RR, id like to see a more detailed comparison... I doubt it would be night and day, I think it might come down to application and tune.

OME is fairly new to the coilover with bypass/reservoir setup while King has been racing down in Baja/Dakar/you name it for years. King's setup is fully tuneable and customizable if you go through them directly. Also riding in a truck equipped with Kings, you can tell by how smooth the valving is. The thing that threw me off about the BP51s are the tiny reservoir hoses. If you compare with the Kings or Icons or any other coilover with external reservoir out there they are double the size. The bigger the hose the faster the fluid can go back and forth from the external reservoir. I used to run the walker evans 2.0 with reservoirs a long time ago and they had tiny lines similar to the BP51 and after a long day of fast wheeling on the Mojave Road the whole coilover and resi was boiling hot to the touch.

Had the BP-51 and swapped them out for Kings w/ adjustors.

Ride wise I do prefer the BP-51s over the kings, however, kings are much better built and the ability to choose the front spring rate on the kings was the deciding factor for me to switch since my rig is quite heavy.

Thanks for the response, I am well aware of Kings race heritage. But I also know OME is known for quality/durability, they just focus on different markets and yes, this is their first venture into a large body coilover.

I wouldn't be too worried about the flex lines... im sure both are appropriate for their intended applications.

I sell flex connectors and hoses for commercial and industrial applications professionally and I think the first thing that came to mind with your comment about the hoses was it might be an apples to oranges comparison.

One is stainless steel braided and other other one is rubber jacketed. While you might see a large difference in OD, the ID might be very similar.

Often times even with our products the SS braided products don't need to be as thick to take care of the same pressures / duty as a rubber cored / rubber lined product.

Not saying it is, but there could be more to it. Generally SS braided flexes cost more than rubber and is considered a more premium product. Just look at OEM rubber brake lines compared to SS braided... the SS braided lines are generally smaller OD but take care of the same duty with increased performance specs across the board including burst pressure which is generally substantially higher.

Thanks for that photo... looks like the King body is overall larger, which could mean more room for oil or thicker parts.

BP-51 is out for me regardless as they dont make them for 4th Gens, but still looks like quality kit.

I guess ill chalk it up to the King shocks being the safer bet between the two due to more spring and customization options, but your comments about the ride being better on the BP-51 is still intriguing. You sure no custom spring options are available from Eibach?; they seem to be an OEM manufacture to many.

I’d go with kings out of the two. The ome shock body is smaller and king would be much easier to get parts for. I don’t believe the ome’s offer any more travel than stock either. Could be wrong on that though.

You can fit the 5th gen ones by swapping or grinding down the lower shock bushings.

King makes a great shock, also check out the offerings from FOX.

Kings all day every day for these reasons:

1. overbuilt
2. easy to service (or easier to service since they are located in California).
3. great customer service
4. reputation
5. customizable

What really made me choose Kings was that pretty much every offroad shop local to me, can troubleshoot/rebuild/install Kings suspension products with very little downtime. If you buy Kings, you know exactly what you are getting.

Thats huge for me.

Not saying that OME/ARB isn't good...I just rather deal with a local company that specializes in one product and does it very, very well (suspension).

As others have mentioned, if you are going to drop 5k on your suspension, you should look into Icon and Fox also.
