OME lift and 255/85/16 KM2's, good idea?

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to make some changes to the 4Runner and I want to make sure my plans will work out. I plan on lifting it and getting new tires over the 4th of July weekend.

-Lift
I plan on getting the OME 3" lift with 883 coils in the front. I plan on getting an aftermarket bumper in the future, but it probably wont be until next summer. Will the ride be horrible until I get extra weight in the front? I was also going to pay the extra money and have them fully assembled with new top mounts, bushings, and washers. Is that a good idea?
For the rear I was planning on getting the 891 coils because I have a large storage box in the back that weighs between 150-200 lbs, and will only increase in weight. I also want to get an aftermarket bumper for the rear, but that will also be put off until next summer. Should I go with the 60027 shocks because of this added weight, or would the comfort shock be alright?
I will also be getting a diff drop to go along with this.

-Tires
I am pretty set on the BFG KM2's. I know I want a 33" tire and i think tall and skinny might be the way to go. I was thinking 255/85/16 would be a good size to go with, and I could keep them on my stock rims. Any comments or suggestions?

The combination:
So I have heard that there may be some rubbing with this combination. I was wondering if it was rubbing during daily driving, or just when the suspension is flexed? I understand that some beating will be needed to get rid of the rubbing. Where exactly do people have issues with the rubbing, I know it is around the pinch weld, but where are other problem areas? Would it be necessary to get a 1 inch body lift to stop the rubbing, or is rubbing something I would be able to live with?

Alright well that basically sums up my plans for my lift and tires. Any comments of suggestions are appreciated.

It isn't going to ride smooth without the weight.

Yes. Messing with spring compressors on struts sucks.

The comfort shocks will be alright. But like the front, the 891s in the back will ride pretty stiff without weight. And the diff drop is a good idea with 883s.

A 1" body lift will help a lot with the 255s rubbing. You'll still have to do a little pounding on your pinch welds, but that's about it. On road, you won't rub too bad - even without a body lift, but you will off road.

Alright well that basically sums up my plans for my lift and tires. Any comments of suggestions are appreciated.

Hope that helps^^.

It isn't going to ride smooth without the weight. I have 883s and they were stiff until I added my skids (and I already had the ARB up front). They take a few months to really break in too.

The comfort shocks will be alright ride-wise. But, if you plan on removing your rear sway bar to get extra flex, don't get the OME shocks. They aren't long enough and I overextended my old OME Comfort Shocks. Go with Tokico Trekmasters (part #GE4095) or extended length Bilsteins (or any brand of shocks that are long enough). Like the front, the 891s in the back will ride pretty stiff without weight (I used to run 891s also). And the diff drop is a good idea with 883s.

Brian summed it up well. I have had several different OME springs on my truck. I eventually went with a heavier spring in the rear... and you may want to do the same with a storage box, rear bumper, and tire carrier.

Thanks for the help Brian and Mr. Leary. Do you guys think it would be better to get the 881's with the top plate spacers? or just get 883 and deal with the ride? I will be getting skid plates, so that might help weigh down the front. With the weight I have in the back I'm pretty sure 891's will be best. If the comfort ride shocks will handle the weight and still be soft i'll go with them too.

There are a few guys on here that run 883s with stock bumpers and they don't seem to mind them. If you are sure you're going to get skids and bumpers, it's worth it to get the 883s and 891s now. If you're keeping the swaybar(s) on, the OME Comforts will be a good choice.

Ok, well then I will probably go ahead and get the 883's up front, and the 891's out back with the comfort shocks. I don't plan on removing the sway bars so I should be fine then.
Thanks for the help man.

Oh yeah, do i need to worry about a panhard drop yet, or will i be fine for now?

One more thing... I have had an aweful time with my KM2s... you may want to consider a tire with a tougher sidewall if you are planning on any serious off roading. fyi

really? darn, I have heard some pretty good things, but everything has flaws... Well, you seem to be a pretty intense overlander. I probably wont be up to your level for a while... That is definitely something to think about then. Any suggestions off the top of your head? I guess I should look into it then.

I know J-money$$$ has had issues with the sidewalls on his KM2s also (he has 285s). They tear/puncture easliy. I haven't had any issues with my Maxxis Bighorns. There isn't a lot of tire choices for 255/85/16s out there though. You may want to consider 285s just because every brand makes that size. The clearancing you'll have to do to not rub is pretty much the same with 285s as it is with 255s.

Alright well the lift should be delivered tomorrow! It will be installed on Saturday. Now for the tires, will 33's with stock gears drive me insane? I like going to the mountains, especially in the winter for snowboarding. How will the hills treat my 4Runner? Would I need to leave the ect button on all the time? I eventually want to gear it and lock it but that could be a year from now... I found a place that will sell/install/balance 255/85/16 KM2's for $912 but after a rebate it will be $840. I think that is good considering the quotes i was given around 1100, or 1200. Would I be better off getting 265/75/16's? they cost more and I might not get a deal similar to the one mentioned. Would 32's be that much easier for hills?

Toyo open country mts, I haven't herd a single thing bad about them. On and offroad. I have and love them.

Are you buying tires online?

Oh and x2 what brian said.

I'll check those out. I looked them up and they do look pretty good. I wasn't planning on getting them online, but if i have to i will.

There are only a few options in 255/85/R16. Of those I believe Toyo Open Country MT is the best, with one caveat... they are about 15 lbs heavier per tire then the others... which will cost you almost a mile per gallon, but you will never shred a sidewall and they wear pretty well. I'm not sure if Cooper MT is made in the size, but I have my eye on these... heard several stellar reviews.

If you are going with 285/75/R16s, there are several really good options out there.

**** Cepek FC II
Goodyear MT
Goodyear Duratracs Cooper MT
Toyo Open Country MT

All of the above tires have several reviews, and each has strengths, but are all around good performers. Some are more agressive then others, but I have been very impressed with Goodyear lately... overcoming my previous assertion of "Good for one year!" :wink2:

As of now, Cooper makes the Discoverer ST in 255/85/16, but it's an A/T. It is a very agressive A/T though. The Cooper M/T (Discoverer STT) is only offered in a 285/75/16.

X2 on gas, 12mpg with 285s toyos

wow. That is not fun. I expect a decrease, but not that low. That must be hard. I guess I better shop around a little then before I make any decisions... Thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate it.

After a nice long and hot day I am happy to say that my 4Runner and my friend's 4Runner are now lifted! We will be installing the diff drops tomorrow and pics will be coming soon.
