Due to a broken lock down washer I had to replace the shoes on my 03' LTD E-Brake. The right shoe broke free of its hold down and the tiny washer decided to find its way between the rotor drum and the shoe. It rubbed its way to oblivion and took a large amount of metal from the drum. - FUN 
***** WARNING ******** this was perhaps the biggest pain in the ass imaginable. These shoes are held in place with a spring loaded clip washer that is almost impossible to get in place (there must be some set of tools to do this). It took me over 2 hours to put one shoe on!
Its a good thing that these shoes do not need to be replaced very often for they were the most difficult brake job I've ever had to do. Not only was it very hard just to get the parts ($75 a shoe at the stealer -$32 at PartZnet) and the hardware kit was also hard to find (the dealer wanted $19 per part!!! - found all the parts in a kit from RockAuto for $15 total).
There must be some sort of special tool to do this job for getting the pin, the spring and the washer into position and on to its place was a test in any man's patience and ability.
If you have to change out your e-brakes I suggest you hire someone to do it!
Makes putting on new pads seems like an oil change in comparison.
