NEED ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO WITH MY 4RUNNER!!

hey everyone!!

new 4runnerforum user!!

im getting my license in june ( one month after my bday on may 19) and im getting a silver 97 4runner.. its so sweet it has an remote starter, two 12 subs ( kickers) and all stock which is sweet cuz it allows me to do stuff to it with my own money. I might rahter have a supra but 4runners are tight anyway


im looking to do alot of crap with it and i want everybody's opinion cuz im so stoked out for this car!! okay so heres what i think im doing so far...

my 4runner is all about the looks and system

tint ( not sure what percent )

maybe some new subs if these arent doing the job

a new system, like cd player and stuff

xenon head lights, maybe tails not sure

tail light guards ? maybe?

any other suggestions please tell me! srry i dont have pictures of the car, it is in use by my 24 year old brother ( he's getting a new 05 545i thats why i get his car)

welcome to the forum! kickers are good subs....great if they're solo bariics. i would suggest you save your money and keep them if they're solo barics and are in good shape, because you won't get anything better unless you dish out $200 per sub for new ones. i plan on getting two 10 inch kicker solo barics to replace my kicker comp. and they're $199 a sub.

there are a lot of good subs out there (kicker, jl audio, boston acoustics, kenwood, polk momo, etc.)...it really depends on how much you want to spend. the same goes for amps. you need to provide them with enough power (not too much either) in order for them to sound good. so really...you need to ask yourself how much you're willing to spend on subs and amps.

well around 400 - 500 dollars all together, i think i can get some good ones but i dont really know how much power to give them and what to get , i migth just stay with these kickers

Depends on what you want to do for your car.

My advice: Do your mods for your needs. We can tell you to get a 6 inch lift and some 36" inch AT's on 15" Beadlock rims but if you live in a city and dont off road its pointless and expensive.

As for the "best" of anything. all subjective. Personally I favor the 12w7 JL Subwoofer. Someone else might say the MTX or Pioneer equivilants are better, just depends.


Just try not to be a poser like all my friends who own honda civics and couldnt tell you exactly what the 2000 dollars they just spent got them and cant explain why they need NOS for their 10 minute drive to work. Let purpose drive purchase.

good advice, i dont offroad much so if i do anything to my 4runner itd be for show like tint, maybe some interior neones * by the foot rest *

but about rims....wouldnt rims ruin the ride, and dont they crack rael easy?

would it be worth it to get some

rims will ruin the ride if they're too big.....i don't think 20's will ruin it too much...unless you live where there are lots of potholes, and the streets are real crappy. 20's is the largest i plan on going if i upgrade my wheels. as for cracking....it depends on the quality of the wheels. i haven't seen rims crack yet...but i've seen pleanty of bent ones. they get bent when you go over a pothole or other road imperfections too fast. i don't think 20's on our trucks would bend easily because i would assume that you'd go for the normal size rubbers and not low profile ones. low profile rubbers don't absorb impacts well at all and that causes rims to bend. besides....low profile rubbers won't look good on trucks because of the wheel well space (unless you drop the truck...but why lower a 4x4?)

Hey, first of all, congrats on the purchase! You couldnt have made a better move. Regarding your questions, here are my thoughts...

subs: JL12W7 or W6, MTX 9500, Fosgate HE2's, and on and on...truly personal preference, and all these guys can handle a lot of wattage, which is a very good thing.

tires/wheels: 20" would be a very good choice as a maximum size, though i am running 22's with 37" tires on my 4th gen. ride will only be compromised if you get a super thin tire, say a 40-45 series sidewall or less...cracking will not be a prob

tint is always nice, and as someone else mentioned, a lift is another option...just comes down to your $$ priorities.

haha yea ur right i dont want to lift the car, unless itll be like 1 or 2 inches, im lookin for a more show type of car, 20's sound nice, expensive :-\ but i dont know id have to geet some bigger tires, wouldnt that mean i have to raise the car though???? cuz that probabl isnt gonna happen,

what do u guys think about neons , interiorly by the footrests and stuff.

give me some other unique stuff, cuz i havent seen alot of differnet stuff done with 4runners.... i have seen some on www.cardomain.com

Billy can make any size lift you want. have you seen his? he's running big wheels (i don't remember if they are 22s or 20s ...) and 37" tires. his truck looks like a show type it's so nice!
