You "tap" into the wire by soldering a short wire with a spade crimped onto the end of it?

Atomic, I used 3-way taps to connect the wires. It's a connector that slips over an existing wire, then you insert the new wire and press down on a small metal tab that slices through the insulation without cutting the wire. They're easy to find at Radio Shark or auto parts stores.

another question for ya, wkparker:
why did you mount the harddrive in the center compartment?
Did you look at mounting it in the glove box? That's what I'm thinking.

Atomic, I had a few reasons. One, that is the recommended mounting orientation for maximum shock protection, and it works great - I've really bounced around and never had a skip. I assume that the vertical location lets the heads "hang" so they are less likely to bounce up and down. I also already had plans for the upper glove box - that's where I installed the power/audio adapter for the Garmin GPS: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9626
