Mike, don't feel bad about having to "take it up the @ss" and have a shop do a repair for you. I grew up in a repair shop. That doesn't mean I repair everything on my own trucks though. Sometimes I'll farm it out, just because I don't want to do it!

I agree with Nash and TBST. Let's let this one go. It was entertaining for a while but...... No longer.

Mike - this actually will cost you way more than just $450. The $450 will piss you off enough that you do the next major repair on your own with what you learn here, you'll build some confidence and two years later you'll be trying to figure out how to sell plasma to fund the next mod. However the next mods will likely be way cooler, functional and fun. At least that's close to what happened to me. Don't worry, only the first $450 will sting.

Thanks guys. I think I had the 4runner working to hard these past few days. From thursday to tuesday, I made 300 plus mile trips. Going up those mountain grades on the interstate with the cruise control set at 75 really had the engine working hard to maintain the speed. So I think with all the driving I did in such short time caused this to happen.

Yeah it did. The overall total was 446 and some change. The tow was 60 bucks. I only get 5 miles free. Can't upgrade to the plus with 100 miles free tow until december because Im a new member.

BigMike, sorry to hear about your situation, that sucks man. I know you were super excited to buy this thing. They're great trucks, sh*t just happens sometimes.

For the most part, they are pretty DIY friendly. But ask questions, read threads, and try a new project here or there when needed. Most of the members here are usually happy to actually lend a hand wrenching too. Organize a wrenching party for members in your area. Even if you don't need to do anything at the time, hang out and watch others work so you learn.

And honestly, as much as it sucks, $450 for a repair 500 miles from home isn't the end of the world. (just ask the poor guy that sold me my new project.).

Take them back you say? Two years ago I did just that. I took them back 2 times and even the 3rd set of drums were out of round. So instead of returning them again, I had my local shop turn them. Guess what? They were perfect after that. Even the shop guy couldn't tell if they were true or not before hand, but if you haven't had out-of-round drums on your vehicle before, it gets scary as he// when they overheat and begin to seize on the highway. Before you talk out of you backside, call around to any good brake shop. I have mechanics tell me they turn even new brakes and rotors because they only want to do the job once. They don't get paid for fixing mistakes.

Yes but who manufactured the parts? You buy cheap @ss parts and then pay even more $$$ to have them turned? It makes no sense.

Just buy OEM or Brembo and you wouldn't need to blow extra cash to get them turned!

I highly recommend using the search function here to learn all you can about the truck. It's fun and you'll find that most of the repairs can be DIY. Save some cash and learn about the vehicle at the same time. I found that using only one word in the search will give you an abundance of threads to sort thru.

Yeah if only some a-hole made a thread explaining how to get around that. :beer:


If the /off-topic/ has gone politically down hill lately I am probably partially to blame. But I will say, except for FL-shooting thread I think everyone has been pretty civil. Different backgrounds, different states ect.

I actually think T4R is extremely civil compared to 99.99% of the rest of the internet (but hey that is on the Reddit curve).

You'll find I spend a lot of time here being helpful. Mike, hope this isn't the first in a cascade of maintenance issues you'll be dealing with. Take it to a good mechanic and have him go through everything. It's better to catch it before it breaks. Let me be helpful here. Change your ball joints ASAP before they fail. By design they stay tight until they pop out of joint. If your radiator is still the original, change it as well. Then take everything else as it comes.
