On Board Air, Which route?

It's mainly for power tools. Which if that's your thing, is a great option. If you're using Lithium Ion powered tools, it's not needed. It'll give you like a 5-8 second head start I guess on airing up, but if you're talking about who can start filling their tires faster, it's a moot point. For that the tank doesn't help.
It's a great option to have but it's not going to fill any faster than one without.

Wouldn't change a thing! I'm not sure its worth all the trouble if you're not handy. I definitely wouldn't pay a shop to do it. It probably took me 8 hours when all said and done.

I opted for the Smittybilt one that has the 5.65 cfm. I am really impressed by how fast it fills tires. I dont think you can go wrong for $150

The Smittybuilt is pretty big and I don't think it will stand up to any elements at all. We played on the beach last weekend and when I pulled out my Smittybuilt compressor, hooked it up the battery, I got nothing. Had it for 3 years, used it a few times and it's dead. $150 wasted in my opinion.
It isn't something I used that often but is nice to have around when you need it. I was fine with it in a bag. Spend more money and get something better.

I've had the Viair 400 w/carry bag for...15 years now. It's held up for everything between Colorado, Moab, Copper Canyon, Mexico and Baja...just keeps running. Easy to use and transferrable between vehicles when I need it.
I keep a CO2 tank in my home garage for light work and tires there, but have always thought it was a bit bulky to fit inside any vehicles.

that sucks. though, that is the first real bad thing I have heard about it.
ive had mine for a little over 3 years now. but, its been used a LOT. still works as good today, as it did when it was new.

Looking into OBA, but will only use it rarely. How do the under hood systems last over time? Was thinking a C02 tank, but no idea where to mount it. If I go 12v compressor, I will go all in with a S-pod. Making it double in cost, but get added benefit for adding other gizmos. Any issues with a small 5lbs tank? It's just a convenient just in case, I'm rarely if ever in places that I need to air down.

My Viair compressors have been under hood since 2012 or 2013, more than 200k miles, and used at least a couple times a week. Do you mean a 5 gallon tank? That is pretty big to mount under hood or pretty much anywhere. No need for a tank for filling tires, only a small manifold is needed for air lockers. Modern lithium ion power tools have made air tools on the trail obsolete.
