One more LBJ failure to add to the list

I've never seen an LBJ failure but the 4Runners up here north of Sacramento get pampered. I've never seen more waxed, immaculate 4Runners anywhere else.

Sad to see.. Unfortunately with the age of these vehicles, the amount of damage a LBJ failure causes, it's enough to deem the vehicle totaled.

[MENTION=120071]mtbtim[/MENTION] and I replaced his at 150k and there was literally no play in them.

Mine are originals with 240,xxx on them. They have no play at all. I've had the rig for a few months and have put about 5,000 miles on it. A few of those very hard wheeling miles. Just checked them again last weekend and still no play. That was with a 6 foot pry bar.

None of that is going to stop me from replacing them with OEM this weekend. The ball joints should be here Thursday and I already have 16 LBJ bolts that I picked up from my local dealer. Why 16 you might ask? Because I plan on doing them again once the truck hits 480,000 miles. lol

I have 158K miles on the 4th gen. Is this something I really need to do or is it most common on the 3rd gens? I haven't been of road but maybe the future I may do some light off roading. I also have the original radiator. Thanks

This is only for 3rd gens, 4th gens have the problem fixed.

Your main failure in that area is the wheel hub bearings.

I've got a receipt in a file that the previous owner provided me that shows LBJs replaced under warranty due to the recall @ 198k in 2013. I'm only at 228,xxx now so feeling good about this.

This is only for 3rd gens, 4th gens have the problem fixed.

The 4th gen+ LBJ's are in a reverse orientation and safe from this problem.
