Opinions on General Grabber AT2 265/70/17?

I saw these on Tirerack for about half of the price of BFG AT's in 265/65/17 (which is my factory tire size). Any suggestions/opinions on whether or not they are worth it and whether they would work well on a sport 4Runner (2007)? I like the look of the tire, the tread pattern, the ratings, etc. I drive in snowy weather about 5 months out of the year, and like to spend time in the canyons and on dirt and gravel roads. I had a great experience with the BFG AT's, and would love to buy another set. I am just not sure if I can swing that much right now. But I will wait and save up more if the BFG is that much better.

Any reason why the 70 would be a better or worse tire for my 4Runner than the 65? I am also looking to add a 2.5" Daystar lift in the next few weeks as well.

i'm really considering picking these up for my 2006 sport. they seem to get pretty good reviews everywhere i read and seem like a great bang for the buck tire. :thumb3:
 
Thanks guys. If I end up getting them I'll add my review along with the others. For some reason I searched and none of that stuff above showed up. Does the search engine on here go down at certain times? I had the same thing happen to me this evening while searching on a different brand of tire. No results, but then an hour later I tried again and got a whole page of results. Weeeird.
 
This tire was consumer reports worst rated AT tire of all they tested in their last go 'round. Take it for what it's worth. Looks like a good tire and a good value to me though. Let us know what you think.
 
Wow, I didn't realize CR rated them that lowly. I don't have a subscription to their site anymore. What ones are rated well? I saw some Yokohama Geolanders for an even lower price. Are they any good in the CR testing?

Wow I have seen good reviews for this tire. Look in Discounttire.com and Tirerack.com and onlinetires.com and I haven't seen many bad reviews on this tire. Also check with MSU4Runner on this page. He has those tires and he can give you a better consumer review. I plan on purchasing these tires within the next 3 weeks to a month. Once mine are on I will give a review regarding them also.
 
I ran these in 265/70/16 on my 3rd gen 4Runner. Replaced them at 30,000 with maybe 5k of tread remaining. Here are my observations...bottom line will never get them again:

1. High speed desert trails in death valley - had a blowout and sidewall shredded to pieces, was not aired down at all.
2. Horrible cupping, and ruled out any steering/suspension issues
3. Uneven wear, like some of the tires just wore faster than others, and ran the same tire pressure.
4. Difficult to balance. Had to have them balanced after nearly offroading excursion
5. Because of above, horrible, I mean horrible highway vibrations most of the time

These tires get great review initially, before the wear in, because they're cheap and look awesome and are true to their size. I think I paid $75 a tire from tire rack before they got popular. But, performance wise, they suck. I asked my tire guy about them when ordering my current Toyo Open Country A/T's and he said the same thing...he sells a lot once, but none twice.
 
I am so grateful for this site and all of the info being condensed and applicable to what we are all aiming for (getting the best out of our 4Runner for the best prices and quality).

I have narrowed it down to Hankooks, Yokohamas, and the Goodrichs I liked in the first place. They are more expensive, but I've had such good luck with them that it might be worth it just for the peace of mind. I don't want to do the monthly rebalance thing, that sounds SO much like the set of Big 0 (yes, I know that's a ZERO!) tires I had that were very similar to those Generals. You never realize how big a pain a set of tires can be until you are given that cursed set. Tires should be something you put on, rotate at times, and not have to think about. They do their job and everybody's happy. Wish me luck. I don't want to make an $800 mistake. :(
