Opinions welcome - replacement axle housing??

A few years back my 4unner was backed into and pushed against a curb with the rear tire. At first I thought the wheel was bent since I could watch it wobble as I drive. I put a new wheel on and the wobble remained.

I then had a new axle put in and the wobble is gone but I can't get rid of the leaky seal. My buddy is a Lexus master mechanic and he's put 3 in for me, and the leak remains. I'm pretty sure the axle housing got tweaked when it was hit and needs to be replaced.

I was thinking of an aftermarket option since you never know what sort of mess you can inherit by buying a used part from an old vehicle.

My truck doesn't have a locker but I was planning on adding one, I was leaning towards an ARB, but an OEM e-locker could also work.

So... with all that said - what would you do?

My truck is lifted and I plan to do a fair amount of wheeling but haven't yet due to the ongoing leaky rear seal issue.

Thanks guys!

To be honest, if you find one with a front end collision or bad frame rust (as long as it didn't spread to the housing) I think you'd be fine with a junkyard one. Or better yet, find another member upgrading/parting and get one there.

If you want to upgrade to a locker, I'd get the OEM e-locker. I enjoy the simplicity of the system, even if its not as fast as an air locker. Nothing at all against ARB or anyone else, just my 2c.

I have one in my garage that was removed when when I changed to a locker. It worked fine, never had any issues with it. 410 ratio. came out of a 2001. the only issue that I can see is you live about2-3 hrs from here....Collettsville NC $100 its yours

Thanks for the offer, but I don't think your 2001 will bolt into my 1998. :(

it sure will....96 thru 2002 are all the same. there is some slight variations in the brake system but the diff housings are all the same.

with both complete assemblies sitting there I know you could transfer what you needed and have it fit no problem, That sounds like a good deal and worth the effort.

I was told that the mounting points are slightly different and it won't bolt up. This is what ECGS told me anyway.

If it will fit then I'm all over it. Can anyone confirm? I tend to trust the guys at ECGS.

That’s not true. It will bolt up. Everything is identical.

Is yours 4.1? If not you won't be able to go into 4WD without wrecking your transfer case unless you are on soft sand. Unless you swap the guts.

I'm 99% sure it's a 4.10, but even if it's not I could swap my diff in.

I trust you guys so I'll take it deves2! I can send you the $ and we can figure out when I can come get it later if that works for you?
