OPT7's New HID Kits

Hey gang,

I've been doing some experimentation with the truck's lighting lately. The reason... mostly due to sheer boredom! Whenever I get finished with some major modification to my audio or electrical systems, there's this feeling I get that's hard to describe, but I guess the term...'Empty nest syndrome' (lol) is as close as I can get to describing it; It's just like... "NOW WHAT..." :noidea: So it seems I'll always have to have some project going to keep from going stir crazy!

So last week while surfing the web I just happened upon an HID kit that caught my eye. It was built by OPT7; which I've had some personal experience with and am pleased to say that the products that I purchased are still working fine and have been trouble free since day one! "Here's what they look like":

Now I know that there are a million hid's on the market today, but the thing that I like about this kit is that it's very tame and may even be street legal! It's output is better than the PIAA Night-tech Halogen bulbs that I had used, but not at all offensively bright like the H-11 LEDs 'used previously' that I chose to remove due to their extreme output! These have a 'soft appearance' with a 6000K color (all color options available). They don't seem to 'rearrange' the beam output pattern that was designed for this truck's 'ON-ROAD' usage. They come to you 'really fast' (about two days) with free PRIORITY S&H. They're user friendly, have a 'Plug-and-play' installation setup (took 15 to 20 minutes to install both sides), and the best part... they were only $33 bucks and backed by a 2 year (for any reason) warranty with free returns! "Here are a few more pics of the install":

These pictures didn't turn-out great because I snapped them at night in total darkness... but I really like their small size for mounting in tight quarters (about H .75" x W 3.5" x L 4"!:

Now let's see how they look installed and turned on:

It's really difficult to interpret output and color from a night shot using an android phone but perhaps you'll take my word... they're a pail 'ICE BLUE' and the brightness is very soft; if you look directly into the beam the light is gentile from all angles; unlike my previous LED super beams, which are now located in the Foglights just below the lowbeams!:

I don't think you can tell from this shot but those fogs are 'at least' twice as bright as the HID lowbeams! Here's the bottom line: I'm very impressed with the whole experience of the new hids, from the ease of install, to their color, output, extra small size and cost! The really good thing is if you buy a kit and don't like them, well... they were only 32.99, warranty is 2 years, install time is around 15 min and returns... are FREE, no hassle!

Here's a link to the ebay website where I got them: OPT7 35W Xenon HID Kit Slim H11 6000K Blue Beam Headlight Conversion Light | eBay If there are ANY problems with these whatsoever I will post to let you know asap!

Best to you all, and Cheers!

Yeah I'll shoot a couple of garage door pics tonight! Thanks again for your comments!

HID's shouldn't go in those headlights, you need projectors

That horse has been beat to death so let it lie. Some think it's OK, some don't. It's been well documented in dozens of threads what the pros and cons are. Let's just let this thread be drama free 'k? If you don't like it, don't open the thread.

I don't understand why correctly pointing out that HID's should not go in those housings shouldn't be allowed in this thread because it's already been stated, but these HID's couldn't go in one of the already existing HID threads.

If these HID are new thread worthy then pointing out that they shouldn't have been installed in those housings is new post worthy

Tell you what... you start a new thread PROVING why that shouldn't be done to a 5th gen 4Runner. State proof, attach documentation (NOT OPINION) from credible lighting experts. Don't use vendors, don't use hearsay. Now, this thread is about a lighting mod. Don't turn it into another two camp opinion thread.

Let's see what you got.

I'd be happy to but I don't have HID's in a non-projector housing

Any owners who think this is safe should be encouraged to setup a test screen 25' away from them and then prove that their high intensity area does not extend outside of the +/- 4" allowance per SAE J599

That's what I thought...

No, i'm offering to check if someone offers a vehicle

It's pretty easy to do, you just need a flat surface 25' away from the vehicle and a measuring tape.

The purpose of posting this thread 'Was Not' to debate legal codes; if all of the mods that were done on this forum were carefully governed by local code e.g., off-set wheels, oversize tires, multiple inch lifts, back-up (reverse) LEDs... this forum would be dead and most here would have nothing to write about! The reason I DID post this subject was because these HIDs could be mistaken for conventional halogens (in terms of their softer light output), and aren't nearly as offensive as some of the 'glare generating' kits that 'DO NEED' to be diffused in a projector housing!

Best to you!

Hi Greg,

And thanks for your input... and attempt to keep this thread from going 'O/T'! I think there will always be those that would prefer sitting on the sidelines, 'booing and hissing' rather than writing about the subjects that are 'important' to them! ...But, if that would change ...what a greater 'Tech Support forum community' this would be for it! Best to you, and our community!

I'd like to see a garage, or wall shot to see what the beam patter looks like. The price is definitely right though if the kit holds up.

I don't have any six-sigma certified doc on why HIDs shouldn't be run in reflector based housings. I think it's a pretty obvious no-brainer that there will likely be more glare. I also think if we're gonna demand proof to defend the idea that HIDs in reflectors are bad, there should also be a necessary demand for proof that they aren't bad in reflectors... which is something I've never heard.

On an unrelated topic, I am always amazed by your ridiculous usage of italics, bolds, apostrophes, and colors in your posts. It must take hours for you to type these things up.

Not quite sure why you'd drift your attention there; guess you really need something to criticize about... why not find another one of my posts and criticize what I posted, not the way that I posted it! ...better yet, why not show us all your credentials (Masters or Bachelors Degree) in 'English Lit'! "Can't wait to see that..."

The reason I posted in this thread is because that's incorrect

Every single thread on this topic in the past has a few of you guys saying you'll blind the world by doing this. Maybe you are right, maybe not. I told you to do your due deligence and start a thread proving your point. You immediately backed off saying you needed a test subject. That to me means you are just trolling and are not willing to put in the work required to prove your point. Either start your own thread countering this one and proving you are right or STFU.
mcarey86 you are criticizing a posting style? Really? Put him on your ignore list then.

I don't agree with many mods that are posted in this forum but if the poster takes the time to document their mods to try to help others out, they should be able to do so without you keyboard cowboys poo poohing everything they do. And yes, I typed that sentence incorrectly just for you. Let me know when you are perfect.

Oddly enough, I do have a Bachelors Degree in English and am in the midst of getting my Masters in Professional Communications with a focus on Technical Writing. I am also a lead technical writer, by profession. :whoo:

About the neato typography styles, all I was saying was it must be time consuming to do every time you post. The skin is thin around these parts today.

I'm also not sure why you sent me your phone number in a private message. Seriously.

From the horses mouth:

Sorry dude. Your way is not a difference of opinion nor is it an alternative way to doing it correctly. It is the wrong way and is a major safety concern. There is no attack aimed at you per se but at your skewed perception of what the "right" way to modify headlights should be. If there was not a safety concern none of us would care one bit. Unfortunately, I see *******s every week that have modded their "bro truck" the cheap wrong way and it is blinding. I have even been known to pull off the road when one of them is behind me and one time they pulled off with me but that is another story.

If you have a difference of opinion on paint color or music or something that's fine. Lighting, suspension, brakes and drivetrain component mods need to be done correctly and safely and your way is not it.

Remember a lot of people read these posts and come to this forum for help and advice. Even though it's the internet we try to keep the information here to be truthful and correct so people can read it and know it's good. I would not recommend your method for modifying headlights to the Barbie Jeep Power Wheels forum. Please do some research by reading the links provided in this thread.

For ease of not having to jump to the thread mentioned below, it's obviously a thread about putting HIDs in a 2013 4Runner (so literally the same headlights rigtec has), which 1engineer also eloquently refers to as a "stupid idea."

It's actually worth the read if anyone wants to "do some research by reading the links provided".

Also an engineer but confused what six sigma has to do with this.

The glare from HID in halogen housings is exceptionally obvious, but I'm happy to prove this per SAE standards if someone can provide a test subject

Since we are all six sigma experts how about I schedule a gemba

Can we put the HID conversion in the projector housing like a 2016 trail , without problems. I have always been curious about this.
