Mat posted this “feeler” thread a couple weeks ago. I think he’s been super busy working on the release of the final 1.05 tune for the 3rd gen Tacoma. Can’t wait to see what he can do with our 5th gen’s 1gr/AT!

I just picked up a 4Runner about a month ago and have been researching tunes as well. Any updates on the OVTune?

Been waiting for Matt to get something together for the 4runner for over 2 years now. Last time I emailed him, I asked if there were any developments on the 4runner platform, all I got was this:

I've given up on him doing anything for the 4runner community at this point. He's asked on several forums if there was any interest, and the only people who answered have told him its pointless, there's nothing wrong with the 4runner's power, its a waste of money to get just 10 or 15 hp or some other negative answer. Obviously, none of them really understand what tuning actually does when done correctly. Matt is capable of doing much more than gaining a few hp with the ecus in the 4runners as evident by his work on the tundras and tacomas, but with so many people telling him not to bother, I don't really blame him for scrapping the whole 4runner platform.
Maybe someday he'll get to it, but I'm not holding my breath at this point. Of course, if any of you are actually interested in spending the money on his tuning software/hardware, maybe he'd be more willing to get back on the 4runner's platform again, but it will take a good amount of people emailing him and posting on his facebook page/website. I've done as much as I can already, and I'm sure he's more than tired of me emailing every 3-6 months, asking him where he's at with the 4runner tuning, not gonna bother him any more.

I emailed him earlier in the week and his response was "Not yet working on it though." I only posted on here because from the sounds of it he was working on a tune for the OP's vehicle.
As far as the price goes I think the $600 he's charging is reasonable. People say it's too expensive but if he was able to put a good tune out there and got some positive feedback on forums/YouTube I'm sure some of those same people would change their stance.
If he had a tune available I'd order it tomorrow. I'd even consider fronting the money for a month or two while development finishes if that's what it takes to get things moving.

I think once 4runner owners see dynos numbers to prove their tune results other owners would be interested as well. This is sorta grass roots territory for our vehicles and many of us use the 4R as the weekend family car or it's the wife's ride as an excuse. I notice many 4runners owners are hesitant even to try a cai or pedal command and have to ask the forum should I or shouldn't I order it. But then there are those of us who throw mpg concerns out the window and pump 93 octane just for the slight GO feel good pedal power. Where do you fall in line of the owner scale for cost to power return? Sure most will say it's not worth it. Is a SC worth it, maybe for some after $10k with the proper URD engine management system. It's the love of our vehicles that's makes us all unique owners. Of course final cost of the tune will be a factor and the ability to prove more hp or torque numbers with other bolt ons. Will I be able to flash it myself if I install a new mod or will I have to send it in to get done? How much would that cost me, is the down time and trouble worth it? Questions like that all need to be understood and answered. I need a dependable ride to get to my 7-4 Mon-Fri job will it get me there so I can afford my tune. Either way it's all fun, do it or don't.

I have version 1.0 of Mat's tune from back in the January/February time frame.
Last week I emailed him because I had to install the software on another laptop since his flash software shows up as malware on my work laptop. I've been waiting since February for him to generate tune files to mach the laptop. You just can't move them from machine to machine as they are tied to some ID on the laptop.
I originally installed the 87 octane tune and have wanted to move to 91 for months now.
Mat is terrible at responding to email and keeping customers updated (at least my experience here along with one other person on this forum).
I did get a response last week that indicated he is working on the 4Runner in conjunction with the Tundra tunes. He said he'd have something for me next week but I'm not holding my breath.
I still think his efforts and tunes are the most extensive out there if you have the patience to wait for him. I'm still waiting. I think this would move much faster if someone were to take a 4Runner to Mat's facility so he can dyno and test in-person. I don't think he's got anyone local he's working with so it's kind of a trial-and-error cycle.

Yep, he literally has, or at least had, a 4runner in his shop, made it sound like it was the shop's test bed for the tunes he was working on.
I went through my emails a little while ago, and every reply from him and Raphael were basically the same thing, busy with other projects, will get to the 4runner when other projects are done. This was from last year November:
We are definitely still working on it, we only temporarily removed it from our site because it was confusing people thinking it was already done, and we are trying to get everything else caught up before releasing the 4Runner stuff
Another several months pass, I contact them again (Feb '19) and get this:
we just had a 4runner on the dyno about a week ago, and are working on finishing up our tune development. We have just been up to our eyes in the current work with the Tacoma. But we are working on the 4Runner!
April I get this after asking again:

I dunno, maybe he's blowin' smoke up my arse, maybe he is working on it, but at this point, even if it were available, would I be able to trust a guy like this if/when something needs to be updated? The person who posted a little while ago stated he's had nothing but problems trying to get support from Matt on a Tacoma tune, I sure as hell don't want to spend several hundred bucks and not get some sort of timely support! While I have several vehicles I can drive if the 4runner was down, not many folks have that option, and surely not for weeks or months like the other poster has had to live with. I can only assume that his taco is still driveable while he waits for Matt do get around to helping him.
Don't get me wrong folks, I commend Matt for what he's done for the Taco community, as well as the Tundra folks too, he's done what none of us here are capable of doing, breaking into an ecu, deconstructing the factory tune, then re-programming it to work better and deliver more power/torque, as well as address other issues with transmission shifting and other stuff. However, I'm a straight-forward person, I like to know if its gonna happen or not, I sure as hell don't lead my customers on with maybe's and sooner-or-later's, and I would appreciate it, either way Matt goes, to have a final word on whether he's going to do this or not, and not this whole "we'll maybe get around to it, but who knows when" replies.
2 years waiting patiently, for me, my patience has just run out already. Sadly, I know of 5 others whom I talk to, they too have moved on and forgotten about OV Tuning.

This is unfortunate, I was really excited about this when first reading it and seeing the work ovt was doing on other platforms. For how popular the 4runner platform is, it seems like we really get shorted on development.
I would love to hear a reliable timeline, even if it's a ways in the future. Otherwise I'm getting to the point of going with another tuner. I know a couple clubs of wheelers/4runner full of members interested.
