Ordered a 5th gen?

Has anyone spoken to a dealer, offered a deposit for one of the first ones on the lot or been able to secure one in any other way.

Seems its closer to release than we thought, yet still no info out there, no clear pics etc. We are almost at later summer, so surely pricing and model specs should start leaking...

I was at my dealer a few weeks ago and they knew nothing about the 2010 4R. I would guess that not many people would order one not knowing what they look like or what specs/options it comes with.

I would think there are alot of enthusiasts on this site that will buy it regardless of having seen all the details yet and want to have the first one in town etc. I am tempted to do so....

You are probably right. I just speak for myself. If I was in the market for a new 4R (my '07 is barely 2 years old so I'm not) I would consider putting a deposit down on one IF the dealer agreed to let me put it towards an '09 if I didn't like the '10 when it comes in. I think there are still too many question marks surrounding the 2010 to put money down on one. There have already been plenty of (real) pics circulating of the 2010 Jeep GC with exact specs and press releases from Chrysler. That is not the case with the 2010 4R so I would guess more people are taking a cautiously optimistic position with the new 4R.

Also, IMO, it is best to stay away from the first model year of any new vehicle until they work out the bugs. That's just my personal philosophy.

Seems pathetic on Toyota's part not having released anything yet, we have known and seen the Jeep for LONG time now. As for first model years, does Toyota ever really have issues with this? What did the 2003 model suffer?

Now on my 2003 Z4, thats another story, but all the updates and fixes needed to correct issues with various electrical components on the early Z4s were replaced under warrenty thankfully.

That's the way Toyota works. They keep new model details under wraps until they are ready to announce.

I am one of those guys who will probably order the 2010 as soon as its possible. It will be my 4th 4runner in a row spanning back to 2000 My family has owned every version/body style since late '80's.

I in fact called the GM of my local dealer today(my family probably bought over 20 vehicles from him over the last 20 years or so combined). I left a message so hopefully he gets back to me with some details soon. When I bought my 2003 SE V8, I was told it was the 1st one sold in the State of WI!

I am a big 4runner fan and need the towing/offroad capability but still very much appreciate leather/heated seats, and etc. The wife drives it now and then and lets me driver her new IS350

I bought mine new in 2003 and it has been troublefree for 6 years.

Sorry, misquoted. I don't have a 4Runner. I've always wanted a manual tranny 4Runner but Toyota discontinued it. I was just commenting that the car that I ended up getting instead of the 4Runner was nothing but problems and it was a first batch of a first year build.

Got mine in Dec '02 and I have never had a problem (other than a leaky XReas @ 100k).

I'm not insinuating that all first model year cars are lemons. All I'm saying is that often times bugs, if they do exist, come to the surface relatively quickly and are addressed at the factory when it is determined to be a problem area. Look no further than the first of the newest Tundra's when they were having engine recalls. I'm especially more cautious when a new generation vehicle is using a new and unproven power plant. I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, that the 4th gen 4R's when they were released were using the 4.0L and the 4.7L from the Tacoma and Tundra and were not using entirely new, unproven engines. Also, even if they don't fix a known problem with a new vehicle, like the 4th gen 4R driveline "clunk" that has been an ongoing issue, there is enough information on the web to figure out what is going on without having to beat my head against the wall with Toyota. Lastly, accessories and aftermarket parts typically lag behind a bit. Shoot, the Haynes service manual for 4th gen 4R's didn't come out until this year and the 4th gen is almost discontinued!

So, those are my reasons for not buying first model year vehicles. That's not to say I won't be envious of those driving the new 5th gen 4R when they start hitting the roads, but I won't be one of them.
